Need more Swede info |

I have what I presume is an M-96 Swede. I found it in a used gunrack in the local Gunsmiths shop/store for $150. It had already been Bubbafied! The gunsmith
told me that the importer was responsible for the hack job and that they did it to improve sales! Dont know if there is much validity in his story.but I bought
it anyway. It was drilled and tapped for Weaver scope mounts, the barrel was cut down to 23.5" and it was fitted in a Ramline Woodtech synthetic stock.
The crown job was terrible and the Brown/Blue was about 70%. It reads Carl Gustafs on the receiver and has the date 1917 on it. The gunsmith recrowned it for
me, polished it out, Blue Blacked it to a matte finish,Did a trigger job on it, drilled and tapped it for Redfield scope mounts and modified the magazine
follower to allow the bolt to close with or without rounds in the magazine. I installed a Leupold Vari-x III 2.5x8x36 and headed to the range with my ultimate
deer rifle. I was utterly disappointed with the accuracy I encountered with 140 GR PMC ammo. Two different types of bullets regular PMC soft points and PMC
loaded with Sierra Gamekings. My question to you Swede experts is, taking into consideration that no other modifications such as freefloating, glass bedding,
etc has been done what gives? The target looked as though it had been hit with Buckshot! I presumed that the rate of twist would not stabilize the lighter
shorter bullets. Wasnt the original load a 160 GR roundnose? Any info would be helpful. This rifle has sat in my closet for 8 years and I would really like to
get this old battleaxe out into the deer woods!

If the crowning job was done properly it should shoot 140-160 grain bullets very well. I have never seen a scoped M96 or M38 that would not shoot well. Maybe
the stock fit needs improvement. I would try and make sure you don't have any tight places where the stock is putting a lot of pressure on the barrel.
Chopped 96 stocks can be bought cheap, you may want to try a old military stock to see if your groups will improve.

DC,
I've shot sub-moa with my Swede using 100 and 129-gr Hornady bullets. I just have a 4X32 cheap scout scope with a 23" barrel. Of your bore is OK, you may have stock fit issues. Crunch |

I bought my oldest son one of these years ago as his first rifle - Kimber had sporterized a bunch of them. It shot amazingly well with Winchester 140gr loads -
but the RamLine stock seems to be prone to cracking at the rear of the action. We have gone through 2 now and each time, it goes from shooting cloverleaf
groups to shooting a shotgun pattern as soon as the stock cracks.
I will be putting something stouter on it next - either a Bell and Carlson with a full-length aluminum bedding block or a M96 stock ( or both for use in different circumstances ) Check the area around the rear action screw and see if yours is cracked Bruce |

Im sorry Jim, you are right. I would never deface a piece of history personally myself. I would have much rather had this Swede all naturale! Just needed some
advice from some Swede experts that I didnt find anywhere else. My apologies, I will watch my topics a little more closely. By the way thats the only milsurp I
own that has been BUBBAFIED!
