Would a 98K fit ? A vz24 ? Need help - I know absolutely zip about this...
What price could I expect to pay?

You would be looking for a Czech bayonet with the circle Z stamp on it as they were made for export. Something dated 1922/1923. There is one up for bid
currently on ebay.

The 98/22 takes the short-blade "CZA" marked bayonet. The VZ24 takes the long-blade "CZA" marked bayonet.
(Long-rifle = short bayonet, short-rifle = long bayonet) The VZ24 bayonet will "fit", but it won't be "correct".

I looked and I don't see it anymore. All the current Czech bayonets are long bayonets.

Forum rules are "No links to ACTIVE auctions". Therefore I am going to disable your link.
With that out of the way, the bayonet in that link is a Czech "long" bayonet, which is correct for a VZ24, not a 98/22. It will "fit" a 98/22, but is not "correct". -Bean

OK....go ahead and erase the link. Didn't know that or wouldn't have placed it there.
When you say it will fit the rifle, but it is not correct - I get confused. Is what you are saying - "It is not what was issued to soldiers who would be using that rifle at that time, but would fit on the rifle and not fall off"...kind of statement ? I really don't care if the Bayonet is exactly "Koshur" or not for that particular year of make and model in History - if it will fit and not just fall off or jam, I am OK with it. DoctorBill

It will fit and operate properly, but it isn't the correct type for that model of Mauser.
Basically, it's like putting 1964 production floormats in a 63 Chevy. Not like trying to fit a Ford Pinto engine in a Chevette.

Here's some photos. The blade of the 98/22 is about 9 3/4", and the blade of the VZ24 is about 11 3/4" (from hilt to tip).

Geez! $40?? I guess milsurp collecting is far from cheap these days. I got the 3 for $21 deal just a few years ago.

Right...and I bought a house for $59,000 that sells for $200,000 a few years later.
In another 20 years, no one in their 20's will be able to afford the DOWNPAYMENT on a house ! It will be like it is in Europe...oh! That's what he wants! Ever since that guy got elected, everything "guns" has skyrocketed... Just now, a year later, primers, propellant and factory rounds are getting back on the shelves. The other bidder was another business....he was going to re-sell it for much more - no doubt. Soon inflation will make that $40 look like $200. Git 'em now whilest the gittin' be good ! DoctorBill

I can't believe how things have gotten out of hand either. I paid $24 for mine 3 years ago about this time and that included shipping.

And a lot of what we are seeing with prices nowadays is brought upon us by ourselves and gun show promoters. There is a two day gun show going on near here and
it has been advertized in the paper for the last month. The top banner on their ad in the papers reads "Stock up on guns and ammo now before it is too
late". To me this is akin to Chicken Little running around saying the sky is falling in. We experienced in this hobby can see thru it, but put yourself in
the shoes of a newbie. What kind of message do claims like that tell them?
So they go out and pay the inflated prices for firearms and ammunition thinking it will all go away tomorrow. And with people willing to pay the inflated prices, there is no incentive for the sellers to reduce their prices any, as they are in the game to make money, BIG money. So that makes it bad for us old timers also, as we have to pay the same prices as the scared newbies. I have seen this at every gun show I have attended in the past two to three years, and as a result, I no longer go to any gun shows, even the small local ones. When people wake up and realize what has been going on, then some sense of sanity may return to the milsurp collecting hobby and prices will stabalize. But until then, I am just sitting on my vast collection of firearms and ammunition stocks. Curt |

I just received my "CSZ" Bayonet with a "K" below the CSZ stamp.
It has the number 8868 on the butt along with a Z (at 45°) and an S. On the Handle Bottom (Is the sharp edge on the top?) is E3 emblem 38. No circle around the emblem.... I would need to use a Microscope to photograph the emblem. I used NAVAL JELLY to clean off some corrosion spots (works slowly, which is a good thing and very well!), then polished the metal with some old BRASSO I had left over from my ROTC days at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana (1968). The Blade is 11.75 inches long and in good shape and looking good, except for the Cosmoline inside the handle and crevices. I want to take the wood handles off to get all the Cosmoline out. Do I need to make a Special Tool to unscrew those nuts ? How? Cut a slot in an old flat bladed screwdriver ? DoctorBill

IMO, it is best to leave the grips on the bayonet. Sometimes they come off easily, sometimes the grips fall apart upon removal.
If you manage to get the nuts loose and off of the grip. don't try to push the bolt/threaded head through. That is when wood splinters and breaks. The grips are very thin, oil soaked and less than sturdy when removed from the metal, or while attempting to remove them from the metal, especially with the age & mileage that are on them like the ones in your photos. Even trying to remove the nuts may cause the bolt section to strip out in the wood. If you do anything, just soak them in mineral spirits to break the gunk loose that is in the cleaning rod channel, use pipe cleaners or medical swabs to clean the opening out and leave well enough alone. Heat is a great gunk remover too. Natural direct sunlight on a warm summer's day will loosen up lots of crud in/on the metal and wood. If you clean them up too good, it won't look "right" either.

OK, WVchuck....
Then I won't attempt to take the wood handles off. It is 25° F here in Eastern Washington State , so my only option for heat is either boiling water, which would destroy the wood handles - or my wife's oven. I used the oven to "sweat" Cosmoline out of the 8mm Mauser stock before, so I will try it on the Bayonet. 200° F should be OK - no ? It is surprising how much Cosmoline is in the Bayonet handle. Whoever dreamed that mixture up, sure did a good job ! How did/do they Cosmoline a rifle or pistol or whatever ? Dip the entire thing in a big Vat of hot Cosmo overnight ? Imagine the smell ! Just wait until you see what is in the scabbard!
Low heat should do the trick. I think they just dunked the entire rifle and bayonet in a vat of the stuff. Several years ago at Knob Creek, there was a vendor selling sheets of it. I kept thinking, who would want to buy any of it, considering the aggrivation of removal, but if a person is into cache storage, I guess it is great stuff indeed.

I got the Cosmoline out by placing the Bayonet (handle down) and the Scabbard (open end down)
into a metal gallon can with paper towels on the bottom into our oven at 200° F for a couple hours. All the Cosmoline melted and drained downward. But now I have a bad problem. The material in the tip of the scabbard has become jammed at the tip and the blade will not go all the way into the scabbard anymore. What is that material - Felt or Wool ? It is still soaked with Cosmoline, but is jammed in there. I am contemplating using a long metal rod with the end hammered flat and sharp to "Drill" the stuff out. Any suggestions ? Has this happened to anyone before ? DoctorBill |
