M48 question

I recently purchased a all matching M48, the receiver is stamped M48, it has a stamped floor plate with a line-out matching #, a stamped follower, trigger guard and front band. Apparently it is a M48B yet the receiver is marked M48 not M48A, is this common or whats up. Any info you may have would be appreciated.

At some point, it became a parts gun (likely out of necessity) just where is unknown. I have not read of any originals so configured. It could be Balkan war repair or an importers cobble together or Bubbas reprieve or ???? If it shoots straight and you bought it to shoot, well there you go. If you are collecting specific Yugo configurations, I do not think this constitutes one, at least not one in Branko's book. It is my M48 series shooter and is a tack driver up to 140yds with good surplus(the extent of my range)...Note the large Crest like on the M48A&B models...Mine came as bolt reciever match the floorplate and stock match each other but not the reciever..Short answer of course was someone switched them and at the time that was what determined in my mind it would be my shooter..I'm very glad to hear of another M48 in a later series stockset, matching From the beginning it was my oppinion that this rifle came from the facility in this configuration..The Cozmo, the absolutely zero evidence of dissasembly even inside the screw slots. The fit and finish is beautiful as you can see in the pics, truly a beaut of a Yugo...Its no more than a feeling on my part of course as theres no way to prove it but I own my fair share of Yugo rifles and have others in mint unnissued condition to compare this one to...My gut says it came from the factory this way ..Some might say it went back for repairs, maybe.. but the big crest backed up with stamped parts along with the superior fit and finish speaks more of assembly line mix up to me..At any rate my Mutt is a good looking one and it can hunt Last Edited By: painterjohn 12/20/09 06:34 AM. Posts: 7 (12/20/09 04:48 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The color of your stock is much darker than what I am used to seeing. Is that the original finish? And can you identify the type of wood it is made of? As for whether or not the parts were installed at the factory, IMO this is very unlikely. If you think about it, the rifles would be put together in an assembly line fashion. If the factory was building M48 rifles that day they wouldn't have any M48B parts laying around as they weren't making those parts until several years later. Regardless, it's a nice looking rifle from what I can see and would say that you should just enjoy it for what it is.

Posts: 936 (12/20/09 06:38 PM) Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	If the floor plate was lined out and the matching sn put in place, I would guess it was done during an inspection or arsenal rebuild with whatever parts were at hand. Heck, a soldier could have fallen and gubered the trigger guard, anything could have happened to warrant a replacement. Through the years I have had several with the dark wood. I currently have a BO with the exact same color, a rifle I bought back in the eighties when they were first imported by a company in Sacramento, Ca. Some have told me the wood is elm. Kevin in Or.

But I have noticed that quite a few M48Bs have walnut stocks and apparently had them from the beginning. Branko has no comment about them and I can only offer guesses. One guess would be that there was an order specifying walnut stocks and that the order was not completed for any number of reasons, IE., political climate changes, non-payment, over supply of stock wood... possible scenarios are many. Concerning your M48, I agree with your conclusions that this rifle left the factory this way. Your reasoning is sound and your experience parallels mine and others. My best guess is that this rifle had a M48 receiver for whatever reason and was built up for the same order that put walnut stocks on those 'other' M48Bs. Posts: 70 (12/26/09 09:39 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	'Nugs right on, this is a Walnut stock When I recieved this rifle there was a huge chip out of the buttstock ..when the Buttplate was banged on it knocked out a chip along the whole right side extending out 2-21/2 inches...at first of course I thought gee mismatched stock with a big chip out no harm refinishing that chip cuz it wasnt original..during the process of doing that job is when I began to realise what I had might just be an odd original instead of a stateside/importer switch.. First off, The Importer parts guns are known to Not have all the BK and other proofs stamped on the spare parts used..this one is well stamped on all bolt and stock metal.. I couldnt remove the buttplate for the life of me and quit before I buggered anything..I did note that where the plate met the stock was a ring of patina pencil thin that had never been broken..in my mind this equaled ..chip made when buttplate hamered on and plate never left stock since..The stock was actualy made a little out of speck, kind of "fat" there and this was the reason for the chipping..This also begs the question, who would replace a stockset with one that had a big big chip out of it?? Well after I started working on the stock repair and began noticing a lot of little things I began to get a funny feeling..Maybe I was mucking with an original "Flaw" and not just fixing an ugly on a mismatch shooter.. Well again, no way for me to know for sure but in the end I got a beautiful accurate shooter in a Walnut stock Note: I've observed quite a few M48BO rifles stocked in walnut, almost seems to me more Walnut than Elm/Beech go figure Heres how it looks after sanding and a little oil stain ..I didnt touch anything except where plate meets stock and 4to5" above plate..I smoothed and matched the color and finish as best I could without mucking at all with the rest of the rifle.. It were me, I'd cut that square so nothing would cause it to push out another chip. I have an M48bo same way. Ain't no removing the critter. I asked Branko about that and he suggested they put a sealer inside those. I don't bother pulling them as a rule so haven't seen the innards of many. Some had a black pitch like coating, others didn't. You might be able to soften such with heat to remove it. Diplomacy is the art of saying nice doggie until you can find a rock. Will Rogers
