How original is this H&R 65 'General'?

Posts: 13 (12/20/09 08:47 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Can you guys take a look at these pics and offer an opinion as to how close to original this H&R might be? From my understanding this is the commercial model that followed the wartime 58C (?) parkerized military trainers, and came before the later 50's military model with the Garand-type safety in the trigger guard. The stock on this one looks to have a lot more figure than most I've seen, and the pistol grip contours are a more defined than on the H&R 65s in most common pics. Also, I'm unaware whether these commercial 65s had the receivers drilled and tapped from the factory but it would surprise me if they were. Original or not, I had to have it so damn the price and today was the first chance for a test fire. 100% function with the two types of ammunition tried and excellent 50 yd accuracy with CCI Mini-Mags. One 5-shot group cut a ragged cloverleaf of .450". Anyway, what do you think? My 65 is parked and does not have the tapped holes, but still yours looks very close to mine...just more commercial with the fine stock and blueing. I also did not get groups nearly as well with mine. I got 1"-2" 10 shot groups at 25 yds.

Have seen another military version on GB awhile back that had similar holes for scope mount. Mine does not have them. Not sure if some may have been drilled from the factory, especially civilian models made later.

However one of my military trainer versions is D&T probably by bubba. That one is blued. I have one that is parked with the stock still in excellent non sanded profile. The rear sight is missing from this one. I wasn't aware of the "General" version. Ash Iron Construction

Posts: 14 (12/23/09 12:08 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Yes, if look closely at the 12th pic in the auction photos, the top line of the rollmark on the receiver is: MOD 65 H & R REISING .22 CAL I was happy with it even if it was restocked - refurbed - D&T sometime in the past 50 years, but if there's some decent chance it's original then it's all the sweeter. The Springfield 87M is a joy to shoot, but this one's even better. Steve

Posts: 8 (01/31/10 12:35 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	This is very close to the military M65 production. The Korean war one had the M1 / M14 type safety. Most people believe the first 6000 or so serial numbers were WW2 military because the Korean War ones start at that number. It may or may not be right. If you pull the rifle from the stock , I bet you will find a couple of things NOT on military rifles. First , I bet there is a threaded screw in the trigger group, I can't remember what it adjusts , but I bet it's there. Second , at the tip of the bar that goes from the trigger group to the action slide , I bet it has a spring loaded "beak" on it , rather than a standard solid tip. Other than these and the better fit and finish , it would be identical to the WW2 issue. Chris

To the best of my knowledge there where no H&R 65 made during the Korean War. The H&R 65 Modified MC-58 was produced in 1958 and only about 3,000 were produced. TYhe H&R 65 MC-58 had the safety placed in the trigger gaurd like the M-14.
