Nice work, more patient than myself. Would you mind showing us a picture of the receiver now?

Here is an image of the receiver now. As you can see it looked better from a distance and close-up still shows tarnish-freckling-micropitting. I will upload all the images soon and post the link to the web album here. One thing I learned during this project is that the camera can be a significant aid to my aging eyes. Photos taken outdoors under overcast sky reveal details that I couldn't see clearly with a magnafying glass under work bench lighting. It's tough getting old... Yes, I did buy the 1909 Peruvian, my next project... This specimen is missing the hand guard and is much more rusted than the Argentine. And its basic condition is well-used with a few Turk 1903 parts thrown in for good measure. Thanks for your comments. Merry Christmas. Dave |

At this point, I'm thinking slow-speed electric buffer, with medium steel-wire brush-wheel?

Looks great! I don't know if the freckling will ever come out without doing some serious buffing. I see a compression mark on the handguard, caused by
stacking the rifles together and the sight release button pressing against the stock of the rifle next to it. I think those happened during the palletizing of
the rifles and shipping them. I have few Mausers that don't have that mark somewhere on the stock.

At this point, I'm thinking slow-speed electric buffer, with medium steel-wire brush-wheel? No, not a good idea. A brass wheel is softer than the receiver material, while even a fine wire steel wheel isn't the best thing to choose. Any brass that rubs off onto the receiver can be easily cleaned off. The steel wheel could "soften" the markings. Dave, I think you've done a fine job. It really looks great. I'd be happy with what you've got. That stainless steel sponge didn't work for you? eb
