Hi! from new member |

You knowledgeable gentlemen have a lot to answer for! After many years of lurking on this and other forums I think that I am now an Enfield addict. I have 5. I
thought that was a lot until I read of folk who have dozens! I have 1912 SMLE Mk. 111, 1916 SMLE Mk.111*/ Aldis sniper, 1945 No.4(T) , 1941 No. 4 Mk. 1 and a
1947 No.5. Aided by all the forum advice , I have always bought good, matching guns. The SMLE/Aldis was the result of buying a scrap ,22 rifle from a mate who
gave up shooting after the 1997 Handgun ban took all his pistols. It was a wreck but I am good at rebuilding wrecks and it was cheap. The scope on it was, under
the paint, a 1916 Aldis Mk. 2 ! Getting info. to refurbish it it led me to an interest in sniping and I eventually contacted The Pattern Room and made exact
copies of the Purdey offset mounts to pair a suitable rifle to the scope. I also bought a good 4(T) before the prices started to rocket. . The No. 4 Mk. 1 is a
bit odd . It is marked 1* but is a Maltby 5 groove, has the bolt release catch and is clearly a Mk. 1 . Imagine my delight when I read in Skennertons book on
Page 493 "A few Maltby and Canadian No.4 Mk. 1 rifles have also been noted, incorrectly marked as "Mk. 1*" This rifle has also a painted
"1" on the butt which some say is in an Indian style ( not the Native American). I am fortunate to live close to Bisley and shoot all my guns as
often as possible, practice and competition. I reload for .303" . 41.5 grns Reloder 15 and a 174 grn boat-tail Privvi Partisan bullet is my pet load. Most
of my fellow shooters reload or use Privvi Partisan cartridges. I am a retired Engineer and do a lot of tinkering with guns. One thing I am envious of is the
ability of American shooters to buy bubba`d guns from junk shops and rebuild them. Not easy to do that in the UK . I am constantly amazed at the wealth of
Enfield knowledge on this Forum. I hope I can add a little from time to time.

Smellysniper, Welcome. The interesting Long Branch rifles are those that incorporate both Mk.I and Mk.I* bolt head release systems.

I will guess that one of these must be worth a king's ransom? Transition rifle? I am sitting here trying to imagine what happened on the production line. My "Gary Larson" mind has some scenarios. ed

Ed and 790racer, It was over at milsurp's that I saw the pics, which I should've saved and I apologize for not doing so. I don't remember
positively whether they were star marked or not.
