Was at the local gun shop a few days ago,and came across a Para GI Expert. It has a good trigger, white dot sights, feels good in the hand, and seems to be well made. Price is $599 plus tax.The sales clerk was no help. Why don"t you get a Kimber or a Colt if you want a 1911 type pistol ? I was rather taken back by that comment. A customer waiting to be checked out simply said,'you can do better". I don"t know anyone that owns a Para, but I find it hard to belive that this is a bad pistol !Your thoughts, please !

Sure, you can always "do better" by spending more, but given the wonders of modern CNC machinery, there are many choices for entry level 1911 pistols that will shoot well for under $700. It really goes at your expectations and what you want to do with the gun.
I've got the Springfield GI 1911 at $615.00 in my shop as the entry level and I'm also eying the STI "Spartan" to add to our inventory. I've used the Taurus 1911 with good success also. It has a bit higher level of standard features (ambi safety, extended beaver tail, rail option) at the expense of a mixed quality control reputation out of the box (though backed by Taurus's lifetime warranty). Mine has been exceptionally accurate relative to my skill level with pistols. $599 seems like a fare price. - Virgil |

Hello rat ! Impressive field test.Kinda reminds me of the test's that they used to do on glocks, useing a cement mixer, years ago. The pistol was never suspect,I can't understand the feeling towards Para Ord. Or the horsey attitude at the gunshop. Guess it is just a local thing.

Took a look at the Springfield GI,and I like it a lot. Frankly,I belive it is better then the Colt. Taurus has all ways been kinda hit or miss. Will look into STI Sparten.

You can't go wrong with the Para. I own one and it is by far a top choice. I would rank it equally to Kimber. The GI expert I believe is the low end of the Para line.

The Para guns seem to get mixed reviews on the various 1911 forums. Some swear they're great, but other swear at them. I do know their resale value is bad, they tend to lose much more value than a similar Colt or Springfield.

They may not have great resale value, but at least they have usable combat sights, which the Springfield GI does not.

The GI model was supposed to be a "replica" of a GI 45, which had the same poor sights as well. Go with the Mil-spec and you get nice sights, flared ejection, port, etc.

I have an old Mil-Spec, it's a great pistol. When I first got it, groups were not what I would consider "acceptable." I put an Ed Brown drop-in bushing in it and it stacks shots right on top of each other now. The Mil-Spec is a very good pistol, but I think they now sell for about $600. Quite a bit more than the Para Expert.

The GI Springfield is within $20.00 of the Expert. The Mil Spec is about $100 higher. Most folks feel the Springfield is a far better gun than the Para, but opinions differ. Some folks bash the Taurus, but other rave about them. Then there's the group that turns their nose up and anything but a Colt.

Hey GLOCK40Man-
What did you buy??? |

Decided on the Springfield GI,Mil Spec. For now. This turned out to be about the hardest choice that I ever had to make in purchasing a firearm. The weapon shoots well and I"am pleased with it. A fellow gun club member has offered to buy it,if I ever wanted to sell. Still can't get get over the basic anti Para Ord thing. The Kimber"s looked real tempting. There was a used Wilson Combat, but the price would send you to the poor house.Looked at a Colt, but the finish was slightly different from the slide and frame (quality control issues,AGAIN ? }Looked at a Doublestar for $1200,but no one knows anything about them. The store did not have a STI, would order one ,but I would have to pay a restocking fee if I did"nt buy it. Fair enough. They are rated highly though. The bottom line is that no body makes a really bad 1911 type pistol. But the variation in price between them is surprising.

I think you made the best choice.

I used to shoot alot of 45acp. And I've had several Colts, and have been largely disappointed with them. I now have a Wilson Combat 5 inch gun and two Springfields. After finding the Springfield Ultra Compact (officer model size) with the conical barrel lock-up, to shoot better than any of my three Colt 5 inch guns, I sold off my three remaining Colts. The Wilson gun is simply in a class far above, and not even comparable to the factory Colts. I also have heard good things about the Taurus. Especially cost vs value. I know little about the Para pistols, but I haven't heard bad things.
I think the Springfield offerings are an excellent choice for the money. The poor opinions you encountered at the gun shop could easily be written off to uninformed people trying to act smart.....

I toured Para today. Seems like they are a good company with people on the right track. Para just moved a few months ago and is still growing. No, I don't own one but I do own a Taurus 1911 and love it. It doesn't have to be a Colt to be a well built 1911.
