I first read about the Swedish Mauser a few years ago in a magazine article titled something like "Old-World Calibers That Everyone Should Know" that was lying around some friends' house (possibly in Field & Stream, but I can't find it online). Having some Swedish blood in me, and an interest to begin hunting, I was intrigued by this rifle and its reputation of accuracy and quality. After a fair bit of research this fall, I decided that an authentic M96 was for me. I actually found one fairly quickly, but, while it was matching as far as I could see, it had been sanded and refinished as well as reblued and I was suspicious of the stock disc. A very nice looking rifle to be sure, but not what I wanted to spend $450 on, especially without seeing the internal part numbers. After a few months of occasional half-hearted attempts to haggle them down a lot, I noticed a new Swede on the racks last week. So I now own my first firearm: a 1915 #3 bore M96b, serial number 357748. It's dirty and beat up but it has character and, to me, makes it feel more authentic. Almost all of the part numbers match (the trigger guard being the primary exception, along with the cleaning rod and bayonet), and, judging by the House Of Karlina site, the stock is either maple or walnut.

I do not want to make any major changes to the rifle but I would like to clean it up. The inside is full of what I can best describe as “gunk”.

The outer metal surfaces, like the butt plate and trigger guard, are rough and rusted.

The stock and handguard have been refinished with some sort of shiny yellowish varnish (clearly I'm no expert in this kind of stuff). It can really be seen where it has flaked off of where it covers the band springs.

What I need help with is how best to fix it up and, if possible, remove that varnish and get it looking like it used to. As I have absolutely no experience, advice on specific products to use and methods of cleaning would be most helpful. What I really want to avoid is going ahead without knowing what I'm doing and end up using some chemical that trashes this 95 year old rifle.
That is my main reason for posting, although I do have some other photos and questions that maybe some of you can help me out with.
The stock has a crack under the butt plate, and while I don't feel I need to seal this up perfectly, is there anything simple I can do to prevent the crack from expanding?

Above the top screw of the butt plate is what looks like the number 4 stamped into the stock. What's up with that?

Stamped inside the handguard are the letters AA. Are these someone's initials, a place where it was repaired, or a sign that I should stop drinking?

On the underside of the receiver are several letters and number stamped into the metal, the most interesting to me being the tiny “G.O.”. More places where the rifle was inspected and an inspector's initials, or what?

A Husqvarna piece?

Two crowns stamped in the barrel shank.

Two lines of text stamped in the exposed part of the barrel. The second line is pretty self-explanatory but can anyone tell me what the first line says/means?

Another small crack in the stock

Threaded barrel and front sight. I've heard of the plastic thread protectors but does someone make a metal cap that threads on to make it look like the barrel is original?

That's all the photos I'll post here; there are more in the PhotoBucket album if you're interested. I'd really appreciate any help and responses, especially if you see something that makes you feel that I should not fire it, as I have no idea how long its been since its last gotten use. Also, my cleaning rod is numbered 858 and my bayonet is 781, and as I understand swapping these parts around is acceptable, I'm willing to trade with anyone who needs what I have or if someone has either rod or bayonet numbered 748. Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Jake
