My new Finn m28-30 pics + ?'s |

Well I finally got one. It cost me a pretty penny, but I had to have it and I rarely see one in CA. Anyways it is a 1935 Finnish Sk.Y M28-30 in a M91 Stock. It has the barrel bushing at the front barrel band. The tang is dated 1919. The trigger has the little spring and the hole that serves no purpose. It seems to be pretty original. I think that the handguard is Finnish birch but the type of wood that the stock is, I do not know. The bolt matches the receiver and buttplate which has "55". The floorplate is not matching. The bolt also has a couple numbers lined out which I think is pretty cool. A cool rifle for sure.
I would like to reload for it, but will the unmodified M91 forend of the stock be too weak to shoot? I hope not. Or is it only a problem when you stick someone with the bayonet and TWIST! Just Kidding.
I slugged the bore 4 times and measured between .310" and .311". I thought that this rifle had a bore of .308"?
When I slugged the bore I noticed that about 1/3 the way down from the muzzle I could push the slug with the wooden rod by had and then it would get tight again. The bore looks good maybe a little worn and a little dark but overall good with no pitting. Could my bore be worn to .311"? Any thoughts? Hope you like the pics!

.311 is correct | ||

that is the standard for Russian 7.62x54 ( and 7.62x39) - I presume the Finns used the same thing since they captured so many from the Soviets

I have an M28 and it looks to have the same handguard.
W/out bothering to look it up at the moment, what denotes the difference between the M28 and 28/30? (Yeah, I know I have the sling wrong. )Concerning your bore slugging, I'm no expert mind, but, where you can hand push your slug, it sounds to me like you have a bulged barrel! ![]() Diplomacy is the art of saying nice doggie until you can find a rock. The rear sites on the 28-30 are like the m39 while the m28 have the older style russian type. And the front protective ears are shaped differently and the blade sight is adjusted w/ a screw. The barrel band screws are a little different, and finally there is a collar bushing around the barrel between the forend of the stock and the front barrel band. Did I get everything? These changes do not seem drastic but that is what it is.

Yepper more or less, the aluminum sleeve and the HV marking of the mag can or can not be there. I have many more 28/30's without the sleeve than with it and the same for the HV marking too. The rear sight on the 28/30 has one different range marking than the M39 the 400 meter marking and the front sight has a different set back on the barrel also. Many M28's sort of morphed over into 28/30's and the ones with interim mods are very interesting to me. Regardless of what ammo you use in them (I don't reload) they seem to shoot well. Bill

I had read somewhere that Russian MNs are .311, but Finns are .308. Never checked that out beyond what I read, since I don't have a Finn. Anything to this?

Keith Reid has that down so pat in relation to the bores I dare not try and remember it. Mainly because I do not reload and shoot only surplus ammo so what I have is what the rifle gets period! Calling Keith!!!!!! Bill
