Odd Unmarked Yugo 8mm(not M48/K98) matching # ????PICS |

Greetings, I am new to this forum and have not figured out how to do some things IE pics/links, please bear with me as I am a slow learner. I think I have posted a link to another forum where I have many pics. I bought this rifle online from a guy who said it was a 24/47 which truth be told it pretty much is. It has a low 3 digit serial # W 139 found on Rec.,Bolt(with letter prefix) Stock and floorplate. The rec is blank on top and left side rail, but on close exam MOD 98 can be seen on L side rail it is block letters not the more "scriptive" style. What intriuges me the most is the way the sling is set up. The front band is a K98 with stamped # not matching to Rec. the rear sling swivel pivots 90 degrees in each direction. It is marked with a circle Z, I have never seen this kind before. I know it seems likely that the front band was replaced but the rear sling swivel looks like it grew there and they seem made for each other. The stock is also unlike any I have seen,it has a lot of VZ-24 to it. the bayonet lug that is marked with circle Z is held on with one spring VZ-24 style. Not the M48 style uni band that would hold both, nothing for the front band but it is a tight fit and very snug. The recoil lug is cupped on one side for firing pin dissasembly. There is no finger groove in stock like on my 1938 VZ-24 and no plug where side sling swivel would have been. The front sling band is higher towards the muzzle than my VZ-24 and my other 3 24/47s. This stock is in orig. Cond. since refurb. There is a faint stamped # Under new stock#... J 4313 in what I would call a more "scriptive"?? style...But there are many small delicate cartouches..X in a trapazoid on bottom of pistol grip..3 behind trigger guard.. a 7 in a trapazoid on top of stock in front of buttplate lip..a 2 on top of stock just behind bolt shroud and what looks like a V in a circle with the bottom and two "arms" of V touching the circle located just above the new stock #. Thank goodness no one decided to refinish this one. ..So now I have a scrubbed K98 Rec. that is unmarked as to country of origin like the M48BO but in 24/47 configuration and in a very unique stock and sling configuration!!?? Please and Thank you in advance..Any thoughts comments or ideas would be greatly appreciated...Johnwww.surplusrifleforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=24717

Hi John and welcome to our forum. I don't seem to be able to bring up the enlargements of your pics on the link. You post pics here from a host site using the "ezcodes" found on the ladder to the left of the text box when you're posting.
Unfortunately I can't tell you what you have. What it ain't is a 24/47. The 24/47 & M48s are intermediate length actions. Your receiver is a German built Mod.98 standard length action. The stock disc also precludes a Yugo built stock. Unfortunately my knowledge of Czech weapons is about nil so I can't help you there. But they were standard length actions and the Yugos did draw parts from one to repair the other as they were available. Being scrubbed as they were may suggest Yugo rework too. I expect someone more knowledgeable not I will be able to help you though. Diplomacy is the art of saying nice doggie until you can find a rock.

Thanks for the tip and comment nothernug,Iposted some more pics on the link site..I have some comparison pics of my 1938 VZ-24..a 24/52-c whitch have a lot of stock features in common with my oddity and a 24/47 and M48 thrown in for good measure. The link and pics seem to work fine for me when I try them I just left click on the picture and they inlarge??no problem.I know some guys dont like the large pics cause they download slow and you have to scroll around but it works best for me to see the detail with my tired eyes, the bigger the better. check out my new pics it was nice having all the models to compare to instead of going to a book.www.surplusrifleforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=24717

PainterJohn,
Not an odity at all. You have a postwar Yugoslav Mauser which has been built up on a Czechoslovakian Army Vz.23 short rifle's buttstock. The lower sling swivel, which rotates on two plains, is unique in the World of Mauser to this rifle, the Peruvian Vz32, and the Czechoslovak Mauser police carbine known as the Vz.33. It appears however that your rifle has been modified to use the Vz.24 upper sling band....although I can't be certain since the pictures cannot be enlarged. I know of four of these rifles now. The serial number of each begins with the prefix "W". Although this Vz.23 varient is not listed in Branko Bagdanovic's book on Serbian and Yugoslav Mausers, my rifle, number "W46" is illustrated on page 312 of the 4th edition of "Mauser Military Rifles of the World". All are without crests. Best Regards, John |

Hi Jim,
On second thought, I guess it is both an oddity and a rarity! John, I just tried accessing your pictures from my work computer, and "miracle of miracles!"...everything works just fine, and I can see everything. Ah, the mysteries of the internet! In looking at your first full length view, it is clear that someone cut back your stock and handguard about 2-3 inches so they could install the larger Kar98k sling band. Regards, John |

Thank you Mr. Wall,
For taking the time for a second look and sharing your expertise!! As of now I only have the 3rd edition of Mr. Balls book and on page 100 is a photo of your VZ 23's sight slide. My rifle also has the curled serifs on the digits although the site itself is un numbered. Also on page 99 is a photo of a VZ 23, The stock has a finger groove but mine does not. Were there both types of stocks?...John |

Here are some pictures of a "vz24" that I purchased in 1967 or 1968 that is completely scrubbed. Is it in the same family? It has a W501 serial number. CG |

Hi Carl Gustav, This thread is being dragged back to life with your W501 rifle to thank!!
I think it is one of the Wprefix Yugo refurbs and wondered if you could share a few more pics at some point of the scrubbed reciever and the side rail? I recently found another of these rifles and in a thread ot Surplusrifle did a side by side of the two as the stocks are slightly different from one to another..DoctorXring also has 2 of these and has already posted pics of one there.. I would like to copy your pics and place them in the thread at SR as well ..PM Inbound Link to SR thread: http://www.surplusrifleforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=84894&p=632828#p632828 |
