M1 Carbine trouble

Posts: 33 Jan 30 07 7:29 PM active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None My Winchester M1 Carbine has one of those annoying problems that can't be ignored. About once every ten rounds it fails to feed the new round into the chamber. It ejects the spent round but as it's loading the new round into the chamber it stops short. Pulling back on the bolt handle about an inch and letting go fixes the problem and the action closes ready to fire. I've taken it apart and cleaned it well with no improvement. Might it be the action return spring be weak and a new wolf replacement be the fix? Other ideas? Thanks.

Posts: 1188 Jan 30 07 9:26 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Steps to take: Check the gas piston to be sure it's free to move in and out of the cylinder. It should have "about" 1/4" of movement. A classic cause of mis-feeds is insufficient gas. A carboned-up gas piston, or a partially blocked gas port can cause it. Replace the recoil spring with a USGI spec spring. NO "extra power" springs. Check for binding in the action, specifically the op rod binding on the stock or the grooves in the barrel. Try a different magazine. Try different ammo. Grease your carbine.

I didn't mention that problem persisted after changing ammo and magazines, so those might be eliminated as problems. I'm going to look at those other items and hopefully solve the problem. One more question though. Where should I apply grease on this gun? I plan on using grease from the little M-1 Garand pots, I assume that will work fine. Thanks again for the help!

Posts: 1188 Jan 31 07 10:41 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Apply grease to: The bolt body and bolt lugs. The inside of the receiver where the bolt slides back into. The cam surfaces in the op rod. The grooves in the receiver where the op rod slides. The grooves in the barrel where the op rod "box" slides. The front face of the hammer. Anywhere else you see wear. Keep oils and solvents OUT of the gas system. Clean the carbine with the sights down on the bench to prevent oil or solvent from running into the gas system. Any liquid that runs into the gas system will burn to a tar-like carbon when the hot gas contacts it, and the piston and gas system is intended to be "run" dry. The gas system is self-cleaning when used with GI spec ammo.

Posts: 42 Nov 2 11 11:56 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	MAGAZINE....MAGAZINE....MAGAZINE !!! Carbines are notorious for being "magazine picky"........Get yourself a USGI 15-round mag and forget about the aftermarket stuff. Worked for me, anyhow....
