Posts: 470 Mar 22 07 6:53 PM Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I've never seen or heard of them until a couple guys brought them up in another thread.Well today at Gander Mtn, they had two in .223 for $149 each. I don't know if they are used or what, but they looked new? How are these as far as quality and shooting. I really loved my NEF in .243 and thats what I was looking at getting till I saw these.

Posts: 1869 Mar 22 07 8:26 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I bought a Rossi in .223 several months ago.It compares favorably with the NEF Handi rifles,of which I have several,and is an accurate shooter.In fact a VERY accurate shooter.It is fast becoming one of my favorite rifles to take to the range. There is honor in doing battle with a worthy adversary but counting coup on a cripple adds no feathers to my war bonnet. Enfields...anything else is just a rifle.

I like shooting it, for the money I was impressed at how accurate it is. The little .22 is as accurate as any other .22, and the .410 barrel, I was shooting at a 2x4 sticking out of the ground, at about 25-30 yards, shooting slugs hitting every shot right where I was aiming. Only thing I don't like is it does not have the "half cock" on the hammer like a lot of the old single shot shotguns, if he slips while cocking it, it fires. ------------------------------------ If your attack is going well, then it's an ambush.

Posts: 1869 Mar 30 07 11:08 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Rossi doesn't have the half cock feature but it does have a transfer bar.I do not believe it will fire on a slipped hammer if no finger is on the trigger.It also has a safety on the left side. The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa. The LT-2 sight adjuster.Have you adjusted today? Posts: 647 Apr 4 07 10:40 PM Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It might not fire, I have not tried it with that gun, just took it for granted, but I do know I have got a hold of some cheap old shotguns with no half cock, they would fire with a slipped hammer, I just took for granted that the cheap Rossi would do that, being cheap. It does have a saftey, but just old fashoned I guess and used to having a half cock on my single shot shotguns. Posts: 1869 Apr 5 07 8:14 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I tried it with my .223 the other day at the range.Unless your finger is on the trigger to actuate the transfer bar to it's upward(contacted) position it will not fire on a slipped hammer. When you say "cheap" you are thinking shoddy workmanship.These rifles are no cheaper than the NEF and in my estimation are just as good and also have a few better points than the NEF.Did you ever see a safety on an NEF? I was of the same train of thought until I bought a Rossi.As I said before they are good rifles and in my estimation equal to the NEF. Stan The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa. But I am going to get my boy the 20ga barrel for squirrel hunting, easier for him to swing the smaller shotgun around for shots in the trees, and would consider an adult version for him with a rifle round for deer hunting, do they make a 30/30 barrel for them? That would be what I would want him to hunt with, or a similar caliber. If I ever come across a good deal on a .30-06 Rossi single shot, or a NEF I would not hesitate to grab one up fo myself. Posts: 3249 Apr 9 07 1:21 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	NEF single shots are made in the U.S. They have nice walnut stocks (who knows what kind of wood the Rossi is stocked in?) and a fit and finish far superior to that of the Rossi rifles. The Rossi rifles and shotguns are made in Brazil have several plastic parts. Also for a reasonable sum NEF will fit a new barrel in whatever caliber you want to your frame. That said, I'll bet they shoot the same and for a plinker it's tough to beat the $150 price. Both are probably more accurate and safer than the older department store single-shot shotguns we all grew up shooting. Click here for match details

Posts: 1869 Apr 9 07 5:26 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	As far as plastic parts,Tom,the NEF also have plastic parts which in some year older models were metal.Specifically the fore-end spacer as well as the trigger guard.Also NEF rifles do not have walnut stocks except in the "Buffalo Classic" model.The regular stocks are commonly referred to by NEF afficianados as "pallet wood" stocks. I really find no fault with the Rossi rifles after having acquired and shot one.I also have owned several calibers in the NEF rifles and at present have a Buffalo Classic in 45/70 and a Handi rifle in 45/70.I also own a Rossi in .223. The Rossi has a definite different angle of the action when compared to an NEF but this has a plus to it in that a hammer extension is not needed when a scope is mounted like an NEF does. I guess basically what I'm saying is that the Rossi is every bit as good as and in some cases has better features than an NEF does. Stan The more I listen,the more I hear....and vice versa. That would be a great gun for my boy to start deer hunting with. Not too powerful for a 11 year old, but big enough to get the job done. His B-day is coming up soon, have to see what I can do. Posts: 1869 Apr 11 07 2:59 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The 7.62X39 cartridge has not fared well in both the Rossi and in the NEF Handi rifle.In fact NEF has discontinued the barrel after only a brief run.The reason is that the transfer bar arrangement used in both rifles does not have enough reach to strike the hard military primer with enough force to cause ignition reliably. So surplus ammo was never really a factor. I can reload for cheaper practice ammo for him. Thats weird how people act surprised and complain that surplus ammo don't work well in some hunting rifles, thats no suprise. There is a lot of surplus ammo out there that take two hits on the primer to go off in surplus rifles. Due to rushed/cheap manufacturing, or what ever reason, surplus has allways been known for having harder primers, or little diffrences in the specs than commercial ammo- like not having enough reach to strike the primers hard enough on surplus ammo. . Keep the extra barrel next to you in the stand, and you will go home with some kind of meat that day LOL . The safety is good the tyransfer bar works cann't fire unless you pull trigger. I have a Buffalo Classic and it is classic "WOW"

We liked it so much I bought another Youth in .22/20ga to throw under the seat on outdoor travels. The .22 is as accurate @50 as any other open site gun. The shotgun barrel pattern very well also. I got both for 99.00 @ Dicks sportingoods. I may try scoping the .22/20. It's buit on the heavier frame. The have the TB safety and a safety leaver. So they are safe but can be confusing working the hammer and a safety leaver. I usualy leave the hammer down and cock it to shoot. The hammer cant contact the FP unless the trigger is pulled, raising the TB. Get one. You;ll like it.

The only immediate I see that I dont like is the bolt that holds the forearm to the barrel is also used for the sling. The amount of tightness on that bolt can affect accuracy. What I"m planning on doing is putting a bolt in there that canbe adjusted w/ an Allen wrench. Then, I'll add a new swivel stud in the forearm for just the sling. I plan trying it out this weekend w/ the Simmons 3-9x40. I don't know what kind of wood these guns have, but I honestly think they look better than the NEF's and I'm a NEF fan..lol

Plastic triggerguard. Also shoot .22 Hornet (plastic triggerguard) in another NEF with camo laminate stock--super accurate and a real turkey killer with proper bullets. Yes, it's legal in some states and can be more challenging trying to hit the eye/ear with one single-shot bullet than blasting several hundred pellets at it. To each his own and I'm lucky enough to be able to do both/either. Rossi is now Taurus-built and I can't say enough good things about Taurus but have NO experience with the new Rossi rifle.
