I have also a Martin Sabre recurve at 50 lb draw. Tried longbows. Don't like them. Maybe I just haven't tried the right one. What have you got?

Posts: 788 Jan 17 07 12:12 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I started around 1967 with a Wing Falcon with a 40# draw(on the light side, I know). I then went to a Jennings Super-T, but currently use a Golden Eagle. I still have all three.

Posts: 8623 Jan 17 07 11:11 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The bow I got when I was 16 and still have close to 30 years later is a Bear Grizzly #50, I pull 55-60 on it. Tendonitus kicked in and now I use a Horton compound crossbow. The crossbow is absolutely no fun and it hasn't been out in years. Guess I have now given up archery. BTW, I still have my 40lb fiberglas recurve I started with when I was 6 years old. I shot recurves on a very regular basis for 27 years. Check out my photos at oklahomaman

First bow-Ben Pearson long bow #30 in 1956-gone Second was a solid translucent green fiberglass recurve in 1958 or 59-gone (jarred my arm ferociously) Third was a Bear Grizzley in #45 in 1967-gone (wish I had back) Fourth was a #50 Root recurve in the 70' (a real dog)-gone Fifth was a Bear Tamerlane target #35 in the 70's-still have Sixth was a Damon-Howatt Super Diablo #50 in the 70's-traded for a Colt Frontier Scout .22 revolver in the 70's (wish I had back). Seventh was an original Jennings wood handled bow bought directly from Jennings in the 70's-gone (wish I had back) Eight was a metal handled Jennings I don't know model since it's painted I bought from a friend in the late 80's-still have. Ninth was a Ben Pearson long bow in #55 lbs.-gone (wish I had back). Tenth was a handmade copy of a Bear Super Kodiak Hunter in #60-Still have.

Posts: 471 Jan 17 07 3:59 PM Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I am just now getting into archery, so aside from some no-name 65# compound bow that is sitting in the garage untouched, the only bow I have is a Bear Cub 35# recurve from the early 1950's. It was my mother-in-laws, but she decided that I would get more use out of it. Personally I think she just wanted it out of her garage... It is legal for hunting here in CA, but I don't think I will be trying it on anything until I can be reasonably sure of hitting with it. I prefer to shoot animals, not shoot AT them. My other toy that I have been playing with of late is an atlatl. the funny thing is that I am doing better with that than I am with the bow at this point. More practice I guess. -Mb

That thing was slow and past 30 yards you could watch the arrows arc toward their target. But goodness was that thing accurate. I could call my shots out to 80 yards with it on a 3-D target and wond many informal shooting matches with the thing. In the early 90's I had the urge to upgrade to something a little more high-tech and faster, so I traded the York in for a High Country Safari. Beautiful bow with a nice laminate grip, 75lbs, and fast and accurate as can be. I've had it now for close to 16 years, replaced the string on it a few times and switched out to a few different types of sights, but always revert back to the cross hairs. It is deadly and has put more than a few deer in the freezer over the years. And I thought $265.00 was a fortune back then, until I wentout and priced modern recurves a few years ago and also Matthews Solo-Cam bows....WOW talk about expensive!

Posts: 73 Mar 4 07 9:50 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm kinda new too, but I've been shooting a perry reflex hickory long. 70 lbs is really more than I think I can handle sometimes, but I'll manage. I made a primitive bow that I enjoy shooting. I'm working on arrows for it. If I can get off work, I might try for spring turkey with it this season. It's in the 40 lbs range.

Also a Quinn CometXL which is a FITA type olympic style bow. I've got 2 Hoyt compounds and an old Browning compound not worthy of pictures. lol

Started back in the mid 80's with a Golden Eagle wooden limb compond, progressed to a High Country split limb that I shot my Elk with and now use a Mathew's LX. Posts: 528 Jan 24 08 4:50 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I still have my first bow, a solid fiberglass Bear Black Fox 40-45 Lb at 28 inch draw. Its still in great shape. I recently cleaned the white rubber grip using whitewal cleaner. The bow itself still has the Fox's head over Bear logo without a scratch. I have two other bows. One is an old used and abused Compund bow I picked up at a junk shop for ten bucks, one day I'll get around to mounting replacements for its missing sights. Very powerful but generic, and no class. The other is a very nicely made Bear Bearcat that had belonged to a young lady I knew. When she died in a car crash her boyfriend of the time gave me her bow as a keepsake. Not sure of its draw weight. The markings are AMO-60" , which I figure means the OAL of the unstrung bow, and 35#, which is probably the draw weight. Though the bow seems stronger than a 35 pound pull. Perhaps it gained strength with age. I've had this bow at least 20 years and it was old when I got it. It has the nice Gold Bear medallion above the grip.

I would say you are correct. I had made my own english style longbow in high school and I've been used to drawing a bow about 32 inches or more. I've over drawn shorter arrows on a couple of occasions, once burying the head in the web between thumb and fore finger, another time jamming the point in wood above the grip.
