I found this online and it was a free download (very large, but free) and was wondering if anyone has played it. It looks to be like an electronic version of the board wargames I used to play. I found the manual, but don't feel like reading 239 pages. Is it worth getting in to? Bear in mind, all I'm really interested in is the solitaire play.

Had this game when it first came out on cd in the store, have the latest free one. love it. pretty much like the board game. Finicky with the system you run it on. you can do campaign's or single battles, ones you make up or by other people. There are still some forums out there were people are still making them up.

I used to love playing board wargames. I guess I'm going to have to break down and read the manual...this game is certainly not one to figure out as you go!

Yup, I've played it in one form or another for about 11 years now. There is also Steel Panthers:MBT..also free but in the modern era.....good game as well!

The Steel Panthers series is the BEST computerized version of hex wargames ever. All of us fans owe a debt of gratitude to Gary Grigsby (the original developer) for not only creating it, but also for keeping the rights to himself when he left SSI and then allowed it to become open source freeware.

I prefered Panzer General. More fun, less complicated. Awesome once you got self propelled arty and jadgpanthers.

Steel Panthers? Wow. Only the best wargame of all time. Panzer General? ICK. PG's for dilitantes. The original SP was much better. Steel Panthers for Windows is much more game than the original. Best wargame of all time? You bet, I started on Avalon Hill's Waterloo back about 1968. I am really old school on this, Grognard. If you've been around long enough you might have seen Yaquinto's boardgames Panzer/Armor/88, Grigsby would probably deny everything, but SP seems to be a computerized version of those games. Vastly bigger and better though. The game is really big and can be overwhelming. The learning curve is not so steep, its just there's SO much there.

Start small. Battalion or bigger battles can be overwhelming. Limit yourself to company sized battles. Start with meeting engaagements. Buy three platoons of tanks (Panthers are a good start) with a platoon of mech infantry. Be sure to buy the opforce yourself (T-34/85s and infantry). Replay repeatedly, switch sides. When you have the hang of it start adding stuff, artillery, recon, AAA and aircraft. I am STILL playing this game, started on a 386 fifteen? years ago. If you want to do tanks, this is THE game for it.

I have been a fan of Steel Panthers since the first one came out in the 90's.......I just recently found World at War with the free download and play it for nostalgia on my laptop. I like the ability to play from the 1930's to the 2000's. I started a massive campaign as the Soviets in the 30's and never finished it, I wanted to play up until 2000 with it and fight every country in the game, which can be very time consuming. I just think the Soviets have the coolest gear in the game, the US Army being up there too.
