S&W serial numbers |

Is there an online site for looking up S&W numbers. I just bought a M29 -3 and I'm trying to determine the year of manufacture.

I don't have any links to a chart, but you can post over at http://www.smith-wessonforum.com/
There are several Smith collector books out there that have serial number charts, but I hate paying $40 just to find out when a gun was made. Smith's historian, Roy Jinks, will send you a letter telling manufacturing date and original shipping location for a small fee too. He can be contacted throught Smith's website. How about sharing some pictures of it with us? |

Thanks Bryan 45, I tried to sign up at that site but they don't accept hotmail as an e-mail address, that's all I have and use. It's a great site
and glad to view it - just can't join. I'd like to show some photos and soon as I take the time to learn how, I'll do it.

I just got a 629-1 for Christmas myself. I posted the serial on the S&W forums to find it was approx. a 1987 model revolver.
I'm a member at the S&W forums, if you want to, post the serial number here. I'll post it over there, and get back to you. |

Thanks for the offer Stephen and I'll take you up on it if my friend doesn't pull thru and send me an invite to open an e-mail account with Google.
I'll give him a day or two. I'd like to be a member. A 629 is a great Christmas present (did you buy it for yourself?). A couple of years ago I got a
Colt H-BAR that way. Thanks again.

-3 model was introduced in 83, -4 model was introduced in 88 that narrows it down somewhat.

Bryan, how much does S&W charge? I think Colt gets like $125 for that info. But the crooks at Colt will hold it for ransom if it is a historically
significant model. At least that's the way they did it a few years ago. I'm not kidding, they used to squeeze you for more money if they discovered
it was an important gun.

Hey Cisco, that's close enough for a year of manufacture....thanks alot! Sounds like you've had some bitter experiences with Colt. I have an axe to
grind with AT&T. It isn't right or fair when big companies take advantage of people. $125 sounds really steep. Thanks again for the info.

I don't know Cisco and I'd hate to guess. I have an old top break Smith, but never cared enough about it to check out the details.

Bryan, I have the latest edition of "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" sitting on my desk. If you want you can give me the details on your
top break and I'll let you know what info I have on it.

I was wondering if someone could tell me a date on a M29 I just bought? The serial number is AYZ 6xxx.
Thank you |

A Smith letter costs $50. I've done 4 so far. They have topbreak info as well. The letter gives general model info & specifically when & where your
gun was shipped from the factory. The letter will verify your gun has original grips, finish & barrel.

Plasma, this is an old topic you still there? I looked in my S&W book, latest edition, and it does not show any AYZ prefixes. Can you double check
and see if that's right? The other AY- prfixes put it in the early 80's range. If you could double check the prefix I can pin it down to the year.
If it really is AYZ I don't know what's up.
