I've purchased a Type 46 Siamese Mauser (mentioned in another thread) and the stock finish is lacquer, but very, very thin. The wood has the appearance of needing to be "whiskered." The grain really stands out where the pores end on the surface, and I don't want to be flagellated for ruining history, but I'm not all that sure that it should be left that way.
I could rub it down with oiled steel wool to take off the high spots, but that would leave the surface damaged, as it is so thin. I could do that and re-lacquer, but then the finish isn't "original" and I get flagellated.
What would you do?
Respectfully,
Eric
