Any thoughts on exactly what this is are appreciated.I believe it is a 300 rd. pack, containing 20 packets of 15 rds. each. The loose packet and rounds are from the same lot code so I included them to help i.d. the larger pack. The 300 rd pack is unopened. Date appears to be 1937. I have been told that it is AP tracer. Not sure what color "grunrot" is, (green-red in German?) . I have fired a few of the 15 rd. packets, all went off normally but very few traced. Any thoughts on value? I don't want to shoot it if it is "collectable". Thank you

All I can say is that I stocked up on the German pre-war stuff a couple years ago when J&G Sales had it on sale. I still have yet to fire a single round of it. On another forum which I am a moderator on a guy was looking for some simply for display purposes to go along with his K-98 and some other German WW2 equipment. So I sent him two of the 15 round packets, expecting nothing back, except the postage costs, but he sent me a check for $25 for it! I guess some people consider it valuable and collectible?

I remember I had a heck of a time shipping it via UPS. The UPS depot here in town changed their hours for dropping off packages to be shipped and I would have had to taken off work early to get there, so I went to the local UPS Store to ship it. I told the owner of the store that it would require an ORM-D sticker, and he did not like that a bit. I had to go into a spiel about shipping stuff thru UPS and what the laws, both federal and UPS were. He stated that ammo could not be shipped via UPS. I informed him that if he wanted to come to my house and take a look at all the cartons that contained ammo that UPS delivered and see the UPS labels on them, he was welcome!

Ended up costing me twelve bucks to ship 30 rounds from Northern Idaho to South Carolina, but that was the last time my shadow ever graced his doorstep. That was two years ago. If it is valuable, I would also like to know what the value of it is, as I have lots of it left, but no intents of selling or shipping any of it.

Well, my issue was with one of those UPS franchised stores. I would think if you were dealing directly with UPS, the problem would have been non-existant. Thanks for the Christmas wishes and the same to you.

those ups stores are no good for shipping pills or iron. have to go to the distribution center. they are used to it and ship w/o any hassle. most only keep afternoon hours. look for a dist. hub on line.

Only problem is that here, the next closest UPS distribution center is fifty miles away! Believe me, it takes all the fun out of shipping something to another milsurper away. Those living in populated areas are lucky.

The "green-red" is supposed to a ranging device; at a certain distance, the trace changes from green to red. I don't have Dent's book in front of me, but I believe these were made for aerial gunnery.

On the UPS problem. Has been a hot topic forever. UPS you need to ship from a main terminal only. Local counter people may have their own opinions on shipping and a call to the UPS 800 number should clear up any hassles.
Try Fed EX they are more user friendly in most cases.

German battlepacks from J&G non tracer, just regular P coded ammo, have been selling for around $200 or a little less per battlepack of 300 rnds. on Gunboards. May get more on auction sites.

I sold some for $180 per battlepack recently.

Some batches of P codes, non tracer, are the best long range 8mm ever for accuracy. Hands down. Now it would be foolish to shoot it up, since the collector value has gone up considerably. IMO

Red and green tracers have not been used since WW11 IIRC.

Red tracers in the cold war era are used by Western powers. Green tracers are Com. block countries.
54R is green only, as well as 8mm green only tracer from the former Yugoslavia. When ordering cases of 8mm from the fifties from CIA, it could include some green tiped 8mm tracer from around 56. I had several cases of it.

Red and green has not been used by either faction during the cold war era as far as I know. I have never seen it. It is possible that some third world country could have ended up with some.

According to the author Daniel W. Kent, One pre-WW11 design was range estimating tracers, the bullet traced green for 500 meters and than to red.

Grunrot : Green Red tracer

Green tracers was largely abandoned due to test results, difficult to track in slight fog or mist.

Ignition failures: four were listed in manufacture but now you can add storage & age.

Thoughts; tracers at gun shows makes the buyers eyes light up, than the sellers eyes light up, and than the price goes up. ~

At the last gun show I bought some 30-06 tracers for 75 cents a rd. 0ne Hakim 8mm rifle, one pair of work gloves, that the dog chewed the finger off. I cant say I seen any 8mm tracers any where?? Is it showing up out there??
