Gun Auctions are very rarely a place to get bargains anymore. Most dealers I know don't go anymore because idiots go and bid everything way above even
retail prices being real butt heads and taking ego trips way above what they can afford or in any wild dream spend on a gun. So I go and very rarely bid and
just hope the food is good and someone I know is there! Those are the only reason I go lately! Bill

Gunshows are like that now.The prices are just plain crazy. The modern stuff your better off going to Dicks,Bass Pro,etc. For C&R,there"s
Aim,Classic....The internet is hard to beat {Gunbroker }.I gave up going to the shows here in Dallas.Seems like there is a lot to the old saying of "he
has more money then sense".Clearly a sellers market and they are making the most of it.Kinda like a old girlfriend,{the thrill is gone baby !!}.

I feel about the same way concerning gun shows. I was once a big fan of them and went to everyone I could that was within driving distance for me. Used to be
able to pick up some nice milsurps and ammo cheaply at most of them. But the prices started to climb and fewer of the sellers wanted to dicker prices, which I
always considered part of the fun. So my interest in gun shows started to wane.
I always made it a point to attend our big annual gun show here put on by the local Sportsman Foundation as I am a member of that group and it is a big three day show and normally a lot of reasonable goodies are available. However, this spring when it was held, I was shocked at the prices! Seems everybody and their dog wants in on the gun buying frenzy sweeping the country since the last election. For example, a Rock Island 1903 that was pretty well beat up had a price tag of $1000 on it! No way on Gawd's Green Earth was a rifle beat up like that one was worth that amount of money! Ammunition prices have at least doubled. A year ago a 1000 round case of 7.62X39 ammo was $189.95 and I squawked about that high price. This year the same sign was used, stating that the price is $189.95 per case, but the case now only contained only 500 rounds instead of 1000! I got so ticked off at seeing those prices and what was going on that I only spent an hour there and came home. I doubt I will be attending any more gun shows unless something drastically changes. Hey M1 talker ! Ya know what I miss the most about gun shows ? That is talking to your peers, fellow C&R guys like us.Seems like we are a endangered species
here in the Dallas metro. If you were about to make a purchase, and needed feedback, there was all ways others ready to guide you.Not any more.Used to be a lot of
sellers who knew their product. Not any more.A lot of your better dealers sell on line or word of mouth.Gun shows used to be about guns and related items. Not
any more.To many people selling just plain junk, looks like a big indoor yard sale.Noticeable increase in the number of seedy looking people on both sides of
the table. Some times those varmints from the press or gun control groups are hanging around.Up to no good, and that"s a fact.In short, the whole atmosphere
has a dark cloud hanging over it.Don't want to put a negative spin {I know I did}on the shows, but weeeeel. It"s just not the same !!

Glock-I understand everything you said. However around here milsurpers like me are not that common, Its been many years since I met up with others who share my
interest in old milsurps at a gun show, and that was Cheapdad. Most of the people who I see who show any interest in what we collect are simply people who
intend to create some other rifle out of a milsurp, and that does not set with me at all.
Face it, the future looks pretty dim for this hobby and in another ten years, it will probably be a thing of the past and just a bunch of good memories of the good times we had in our younger years. I am not trying to be the chicken little, but you have to face up to the world around you. Curt |

There are still deals out there but one has to look hard and be patient. When things have an established value in today's market that is high they just
don't always sell as in the above case. I have no idea whether that gun was worth that much in pristine condition but if it was then the miss-led owner of
a clapped out version figures his is worth that forgetting the most important word, Condition! I come home from gun-shows empty handed more often than not but
sometimes I grab a gem because many people have given up completely on them. Thanks I appreciate that and why you have! We are no longer fishing or hunting in
a game filled paradise like we did years ago and one must look hard and long and take the fact that there isn't much left out there anymore under
advisement. Prices? Well lets put it this way there are a lot of people paying top rung prices that may find themselves not getting that much back but that is
the gamble one takes these days. If OB does the wrong things we may all be hurting and he may have one heck of a fight on his hands. It could get a lot worse
before it gets better so don't whine too much and just hope better days are ahead and prepare for a good fight if it doesn't work out that way. Bill

I still go to some shows when I can, though I buy far less than I used to. Mostly I go to see to what level my past investments may have amortized. I also like
to keep my fingers on the pulse of this group of people as their overall mood may have some bearing on how I should plan for the future, economically,
politically and personally. But even though all that is said about the ridiculously high prices and often scarcity of key items is true, what zeebill says is
still true as well, there are still deals to be found if you look with diligence!
Occasionally, you just get lucky, if you put yourself in the right place often enough for the right time to occur. As far as the ridiculous prices being asked, I'm simply not buying, and I can laugh at those who are, but the sellers can ask whatever they want as far as I'm concerned. It's their items! |

We've all got lucky at auction at one time or another, but I normally see uneducated buyers paying WAY too much money for objects.
A couple weeks ago I was amazed at how high a "unfired" P38 went for. Anyone with half a brain could look in the bore and see the wear, but that didn't stop the auctioneer from advertising it as unfired and telling the crowd "as far as we can tell, this gun has never been fired." Just this Saturday I saw a guy pay $400.00 for a Luftschutz helmet with the decal scraped up and the chinstrap broken. He was a good $250.00 or more too high. I'm sure the high bidder just bought it because the auctioneer called it a "rare nazi helmet" |

I've given up on any new purchaces for the time being. Indeed I've sold off a decent amount of lesser loved units that I did have.
The divorce lawyers are costing me about 2 Garands/month and there is no quick end in sight... |

Ending of an age....... | ||

I think the age of TRUE military surplus has all but ended, and this whole ammo shortage and (although I love internet shopping) the internet has driven up prices like crazy because now sellers can offer their stuff to buyers all over the globe to anyone legally able to own a gun. The CMP was the last of the great American "surplus" outlets where a genuine military issue Garand or 03 could be had for under $400 but re-sellers and "investors" soiled the purity of this for all of us. Mosins and other of the trillion-produced weapons are maybe the last of what I would call "surplus" with maybe some stuff out there like Turk Mausers that make good shooters but never will capture (I hate the term) "collector" interest. I collect Mosins but only the refurbs are true surplus, a sturdy accurate rifle for under $100. Even in the past they were all just "Russian rifles" but now the sellers and now buyers have let the market evolve to where different variations command higher prices. Even 6 years ago no one much cared if it was a Tula hex, a Bulgarian capture or an "AZF" M91 they were all $80, now there are more collectible Mosins. Now I have more fun browsing the racks of my local gun shops that are 10 minutes away, and have been lucky with the odd good find here and there. I am pretty much done making a day trip and a 3 hour drive to a gun show just to come away with something I could have bought locally, and to be teased by stuff I can't afford anyway and just leave disgruntled with a refurb $130 Nagant revolver or yet another 91/30 as a consolation prize. All of the affordable stuff is stuff I don't need or want anyway, like beat up Romanian Tokarevs, Turk Mausers that look like they were thrown down a rock cliff or common stuff I already have 7 of like Chilean Mausers and Yugo M48's. |
