Posts: 237 (10/20/09 05:36 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Let's say that the situation has come when the 'crud has finally hit the fan', and you will need to select a 'milsurp' firearm from your own collection to carry as a defensive weapon. What would that weapon be, and why? I am leaning toward the SKS. Reason being that this rifle seems to be very reliable, durable, semi-auto, fairly accurate, and easy to handle. Also, the ammo is fairly light, (you can pack more rounds with less weight), the ammo seems to have fairly good knock-down power and velocity. Chances are, the other side will be shooting the same round. Hence, any captured ammo can be used against them. I don't have any experience with an AK-47 as I don't have one in my collection, however, I would have to think that it is fairly similar to it's cousin, the SKS. As a 'back-up' weapon, I would keep the M1-Garand handy. Simply because you can't argue with success. The rifle that won WWII. Volga

Posts: 1301 (10/20/09 06:05 PM) Forum Co-host Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	My Norinco Type 84S-1 5.56x45 AK, since I'd have use of "Allied" ammo as well as bring a bit more accuracy to the table than with a 7.62x39. Being able to use captured mags and ammo would be useful (for my MAK-90, say), but I'd have to SOLELY rely on it once my own, personal supply of 7.62x39 ran out.

The reality of the subject is that the opposition will also be shooting at you. So, how long will you last with a 10 round magazine and no body armor? At least with a high cap rifle (as in 30+ rounds) you can lay down suppressing fire while you are relocating from one spot to another. Also, have you ever tried loading the SKS with a stripper clip in a hurry, much less being shot at? This is why I think the SKS in its original military form is limited for such a scenario. The distance people will be shooting will probably be under 100 yards so a well built AK would work just fine if that day ever comes. Let's all hope it does not because the reality of it is that most will bite the bullet before they even fire 100 rounds. My choices would probably be a AK74 or my Grendel, a very accurate scoped hunting rifle and a 45 ACP on my hip. Smokepole

Posts: 5069 (10/20/09 10:58 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Gotta look at reliability and ammo availability. AK-47 and a 5.56 chambered gun. I'll stick with my Mini-14s. Screw the M16 based rifles. Direct impingement gas rifles are a enemy's best friend. My old CETME runs great for a .308.

I dunno 'bout you, but I'm staying home and holding down the fort. Thus I'll have access to more than one, in a variety of calibers that I'll find or trade for when needed. Or from a "battle field" pickup. The man with a single firearm, all by himself, is a dead man. Maybe not at the moment, maybe not even for a year, but dead never the less. I don't plan on being alone, so I don't plan on a single firearm. However, to play the game (the last time HSC did this I sort of "rained on his parade"), if only having one, maybe two, and a sidearm. AK 74 (5.45x39 as I have one and enough magazines for a full battle load and a full case of ammo) M1 Garand (backup for those situations needing a little more oomph or range) S&W 629 Mountain Gun (good all around pistol, and if your relying solely on a pistol, your a gonner eventually. I assume we are talking about a revolution, civil war, or invasion, or a combination civil war/invasion, or whatever would bring on long term social chaos. Weaponry would be the least of many people's problems. What about food supplies? If you live in an urban area food stocks will disappear immediately. Even if if you're agriculturally self-sufficient a hungry military unit may confiscate all your family's food.....just think of Sherman's March to the Sea in 1864. Are you willing to fight a tank platoon over your potato crop? What about a total breakdown of the medical care? Anyone with a medical condition that absolutely requires medication may very well be doomed. That means dependence on heart medicine, insulin, etc, etc.... will be a death sentence for some folks. Are most Americans ready for that?? What happens to your kin that are very young or elderly, especially if survival dictates that your family must rapidly relocate on foot? For those individuals that have the idea of defending their home, is your house really a good defensive position?? I live out in the country but I know my house is not defendable, unless I want to make a last stand there. I know the only tactically survivable position on my land is the treeline on the high ground. Guys, I don't want to be a devils advocate, but any scenario that requires you to expend copious amounts of ammo at numerous enemies in a combat environment means BIG trouble on so many levels.

Other than that the Garand has helped liberate the world so I could trust it to protect me and my home. Ditto the M1 Carbine, but ammo for both would be limited. So it's all about the AR or the AK. I'll take both.

Food is already short and the global economy has come to a complete stop. Theirs no oil, no gas and the power grid is down, along with all your electronic devices. Or better yet, in 2012 the earth shifts on it axis and the North pole is now in Georgia........ An AK if you have one, would still be most peoples go to weapon. I love my Garand's but they are heavy. Direct gas impingement BS be darned, I'll take my M4 because I have 3 ammo cans of reloads on strippers & more mags than I can carry and I've had more stoppages from my AK's than AR's over the years. Second would be AK74--cases of ammo in reserve. The good ole' Garand is worth a mention as well. I have some excellent late 50's Taiwanese ammo in reserve there, and I would not want to be in a squad of assault riflemen against a troop of M1 riflemen, at say about, 300-400-500 yds. Eb is right, one man alone is a soon to be goner, but I bet my house is the last on my street to have it's pantry emptied!

That said there are plenty of things that could wipe us out.....most likely would be a bacterial mutation ("evolution" actually but that word is evil). With antibacterial soaps causing increased resistance and world travel like it is..........we'd be gone pretty quickly. Even a viral strain that attacked cows would kill out all breeds quickly since those have had almost all species differences bred out of them, that alone would do well for a world breakdown. hsc One would need either a well-secluded (hidden) and fortified, well-stocked position OR to be able to move about easily and become totally nomadic. Any health condition would become fatal rather quickly.......food and shelter would be paramount. I have a good bit of ammo but it isn't that mobile. 5.45x39 dominates my stocks, so the AK 74 takes the lead there but that's a rare caliber in most places. Posts: 532 (10/22/09 10:21 AM) Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Well, I don't know about meteors or zombies, but if I hear screams and whoops of "Whoaa Muhammad", then I know it must the Taliban paratroopers landing in the school yard behind my house. In such a sudden and last ditch situation, I believe I have enough 8-round 30.06 clips on hand to hold them off with my Garand. But for a sustained firefight, I have to load up my Bulgarian AK47. I really like my Bulgy, they are well made and reliable, and the plastic waffle mags are easy to handle with the AK speed loaders and the 10-round stripper clips. I would also load up my all Enfields and place them around the house as backup at each firing port. For last ditch, I would be use my Sterling and try to send as many of them as possible to claim their rewards of young virgins!

Do I need gas checks? As others have pointed out, very few would survive a large scale domestic disruption/breakdown, and those survivors wouldn't last long-term anyway. But as optimists, we [myself included] plan to survive the unthinkable and unsurvivible. Posts: 4121 (10/22/09 10:49 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	HSC, you hit on a point that many don't consider; it's great to have all kinds of weaponry and stocks of ammo, but who is going to lug that stuff around if you have to displace from your location? I think that because we are gun enthusiasts we have a tendency to fixate on firepower rather than other factors. For example, instead of a tricked out big $$$ pistol, I would rather carry a plain jane S&W Model 19 and put the money saved into a well stocked first aid bag, a cache of food, water purification gear, a wood burning stove, etc, etc.... In late January of this year KY was hit by the biggest ice storm in recorded history. My neck of the woods was without power for 9 days. Three of the nights temps dropped below 0 degrees. There are ten families in my area, and by day six without power seven of those families had given up and left for the sanctuary of a motel or relative's house. The three families that stayed ( my family and two older couples) had prepared and thought out a course of action before the storm. My point is the best weapon any of us possess is that thing in our skulls called a brain. A coherent common sense plan, resilency and perservance are more important than fancy firepower. Since the gist of the first post was about firepower, I would say that an SKS is more than adequate. Those that denigrate SKS firepower need to practice with the ten round stripper clips. They work better than aftermarket removeable magazines, even the Tapco plastic mags in my experience.

I would imagine the anti's think .50 BMG is somehow able to do that...okay, end of political discussion. Just saw one I couldn't resist. I'd agree that you're not really going to stand any kind of chance against an enemy military. Gang-bangers, rogue bikers, violent rioters, or zombies that suddenly think your property is theirs on the other hand, with some people (i.e. the local police and maybe a neighbor or two) nominally on your side...a bit different. I don't think these individuals FOR THE MOST PART would be smart enough to poison your food supply, cut your off your water supply, and actually isolate you in every way possible before attempting to assault you.
