Posts: 99 (11/07/09 06:01 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I picked up a 1941 VKT M39. Mosins are new to me When you cycle the bolt the handle it doesn't lock down tightly. It only takes Slight pressure upwards & it would lift the bolt hande. Is this normal? I mostly have Mausers which close tightly. The bolt seems to operate correctly & the safety moves easily. I'm willing to bet all of my MNs operate identically, but it would take a while o check them all. Yours should be fine.

They built those rifles with loose tolerances so they can operate in all adverse conditions. As long as it operates correctly, fires correctly and your safety works I would not worry too much about it. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Like nothernug said not a lot of people are aware it has a safety or how to operate it. Mike

It turned out OK, but I was really wondering for a minute there. LOL, at the safety. Yeah, not many know about that and some argue pretty strongly that it doesn't exist.

Posts: 5536 (11/09/09 05:08 AM) Host Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Unlike the Mauser design, the Mosin bolt has a head with locking lugs that is separate from the bolt body. A bolt connector allows them to work in unison. Sometimes there is a little "play" or "slop" when to get one part (the bolt head) to rotate you have to apply pressure to two other linked parts (bolt body and connector) in a sequence. It is normal. Posts: 151 (11/09/09 09:43 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Everything is looser than you expect - until you actually chamber a round. Then the bolt locks up in the closed position just fine. Just make sure it's fully closed when you fire.

Tighten up the connector link and one finds the entire action of the Mosin bolt and lockup is tightened. Took me a very long time to figure that out for some reason? Real Good point to absorb and may get overlooked so I had to open my big mouth and shout it out a bit! Bill

I kind of watch the lag between the parts when chambering a round at the range and also watch to see how much movement is seen in the bolt at the firing instant. If I see a lot I check wear at the end of the connecting link and also look and see whether it is bent open too much and allows a lot of slop in the bolt. In all honesty I have only tightened or changed the connecting link a couple of times in all the rifles I have fired or own. But it sure was not evident to me that this connecting link was a clue or a problem for many years till I really sat down and looked an M39 PL marked in a great stock I was getting scared to shoot it was so indecisive and I was so unsure of lockup becoming a problem. It shoots great now and is much more accurate than my old eyes allow it to be. I also feel confident it is locking decisively with little or no slop in the bolt too. Sure took me a lot of looking and thinking and changing parts to realize this and that is why I am mentioning it. Might save someone time and effort and keep them safe too. Bill Whoops!
