German made, Argentine '09 Mauser & ammo? |
Lead | |
|
As the '09 Argentine Mauser was made in Germany and I don't see a forum dedicated to the Argentine, I guess this is the most appropriate place to seek
some answers. I recently bought a very nice '09 Argentine, all matching numbers. I presume it's chambered in 7.65X53 as there are no chambering
markings on it. Then I bought a couple of boxes of FNM, Portuguese made I think, Municoes de Armas Ligeiras ammo labeled 7.65X53 Argentine, 174 gr FMJ, BT.
Problem is it wont chamber. I pulled a bullet and run the case through a 7.65X53 BM RCBS FL size die, no expander plug. Still it won't chamber. Thinking
that perhaps my old Pacific #1 shell holder might be worn at the bottom, I slipped a 0.010 shim under the case head and resized. Still it won't chamber.
Then I trimmed the case neck nearly 0.020" and still it won't chamber. The bolt locking lugs just barely begin to engage. I heard that some '09
Argentines may have been chambered for the 308 Winchester, but it won't chamber either! What gives here?

Two boards down on the index page is the Spanish, Central and South American Forum, which would have been the better place for this thread. Perhaps a moderator
will move it there.
In answer to your question, I would recommend that you get some calipers &/or micrometers to check the actual dimensions of the ammo you are working with against a listed set of dimensions for that round. Still, a .308 round should just fall into the chamber of a 1909 Arg. in 7.65x53 so there must be some issue with the chamber. Have you checked it thoroughly for any cosmoline or other old crud that could be in there? Is the barrel numbered matching to the receiver? What is the diameter of the bore at the muzzle? I don't know why the Portugese would have surplus ammo for the 7.65x53 as I don't think they ever used it, but that asside your rifle really should be able to easily chamber a .308, so something does seem seriously wrong with that. Perhaps taking it to a qualified gunsmith would be a good idea if you can't find what the problem is yourself. Good luck with that, and let us know what you find out! |

Rcbs sells a form die for the 7.65 argentine it will push the shoulder back far enough to work in the 1909 , their 7.65 belgian mauser dies wont , get a box of
norma ammo and try it it is sized for the 1909"s also are you feeding shell into chamber from magazine it needs to be under the extractor. I use a set of
lyman dies I bought long ago and they work fine. The chambers of 1891s are longer than the 1909s I believe about a tenth of a inch and all the new privy brass
I bought is sized for the 1891s, norma brass has shoulder pushed back farther and chambers fine in my 1909s, hope this helps aaron10 ps 308 wont chamber
shoulder diameter is to large for argentine chambers

Brazilian not Argentine | ||
|
After a night to think about it and upon much closer inspection I find that it is a model 1908 Brazilian in 7X57 not a '09 Argentine in 7.65X53. Import
marks indicate Springfield armory, but there are no caliber markings to be found. It's sure a beautiful rifle. I apologize for the confusion.

Yep, .308 and .311 diameter bullets are going to have a tough time fitting into a 7mm chamber, throat and bore. Glad you got it figured out.
Good Luck!!! |
