Posts: 4256 Dec 4 09 5:17 PM Forum Site Moderator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I bought a Ruger Ranch Rifle a number of years ago (ten +) and never did anything with it including test firing it. Don't ask me why. In the intevening years I read they and the Mini 14 were inaccurate. I did try it out last summer and it didn't perform very well. I decided to buy an Accu Strut barrel stiffener for it and gave it another try yesterday. Using American Eagle ammo at 50 yards with iron sights I managed a 5 shot group at 1 3/16". Conditions were bad since it was cold and windy and I was wearing gloves trying to keep my fingers from gettng numb. I don't like the sight setup either. I've got the scope rings for it so I'm going to get a scope since I see it has some potential. Carl

I never understood the A-Team attitude everyone seemed to have about them, the legendary inaccuracy failure of the Mini-14 series, etc... I guess as written in previous posts, I had the mutant Mini-14 Stainless Ranch that actually performed like a rifle should. With handloads I was getting 3/4" to 1" groups at 100 yards with it (using a scope with factory rings). Owned it for several years and enjoyed shooting it, but got the itch for a "real" 5.56 and traded it in on an SP-1 back in the early 90's. The dealer was thrilled about the trade as the Ruger brand sold well in his shop and he didn't like having those black rifles in the inventory. The SP-1 didn't shoot any better, but magazines were sure easier to find for it!

I may or may not get to try mine out this Thursday due to weather: winter storm warning for tomorrow and Wednesday and high of only 12 predicted for Thursday and I'm sure there'll be strong NW winds after the low moves through. I do have a scope mounted on it now so it's ready to go. I'll be reporting back when conditions prove favorable. Carl

The winter strom warning for tonight and tomorrow has been upgraded to a blizzard warning with poor visiblity and 45 mph winds. I don't recall a blizzard warning here in recent history. The roads to the range may not even be plowed by Thursday AM to say nothing of the fact that the county is also responsible for plowing the range access driveway and parking area. Even it were accessible, 2 above zero and 20 or 25 mph north winds aren't conducive to accurate shooting. Carl

They've upgraded our weather here too. Yesterday evening, we were told to expect wind gusts up to 70mph in some regions this evening. We did get the ton of rain last night and the temps are supposed to drop 25+ from this morning through 5pm. At least the weather folks that get paid to guess what we're going to get are spot on the money so far this week.

Posts: 5590 Dec 12 09 5:35 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Yeah, my "fun" shooting takes a break during the winters, it's hard to drag myself to the range when it's 10 degrees out. I spend enough "forced range time" at Ft. Drum (aka The Hoth Planet) that I vowed never again to freeze if I didn't absolutely have to when I am a civilian again. I have never had a Ruger rifle, just an avid shooter of the revolvers, but I am looking for a Mini 14 and 30, these are a tough pull used around where I'm at and the used prices are often not much lower then new. I am looking for LE trade in rifles that are beat up/neglected but not fired much, since these were popular "patrol rifles" for PD's but now many are going to the semi auto M4 type rifles. Maybe not as truly accurate as the AR-M16 platform but for sure a tougher rifle.

Posts: 2483 Apr 7 10 8:09 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I've been considering buying one of the standard Mini 14's (I don't like the Ranch Rifle)in stainless steel. But I'm torn between the Mini and the Century C93 H&K 33 clone. I know CAI's QC is spotty, but the price is nearly the same for both rifles for a careful shopper, as is the cost of magazines. The charging handle is right in front of your nose and readily worked with the non-firing hand. The C93's charging handle takes a little work. The safety on the Mini 14 is the absolute best for a left handed person, whereas, in contrast, the safety for the C93 is more difficult to work with the left index finger. I also am guilty of buying a Ruger Mini 14, dressed it all up and never took it to a dance. It has sat in the safe for 6-7 years I think. I don't know why I never got around to shooting it. Now it sits along side a "Superior" arms AR type. Guess I will have to get them both out & use them.
