Include how many clicks from bottom should get you started at say 100 yards. How many clicks up are needed for each 100 yards thereafter? Gonna stick this one up when it gets done so make it good. Posts: 2337 Aug 29 05 7:59 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Trick question! Depends on the tolerances in the parts! However "most" M1s will get a 100yd zero with about 8-12 clicks of elevation. A good 25m zero will get you a "good" 200yd zero within a click or so. Now from there.. (200yd BZO): subtract 2MOA for a 100yd zero add 2 MOA for a 300yd zero. add 5 for a 400yd zero add 7 for a 500yd zero Or from 100yds: add 2 MOA for a 200, then add 2 more for a 300, then add 3 more for a 400, then 4 more for a 500. Simple, eh?

Posts: 880 Aug 29 05 8:06 PM Veteran member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	First I shoot one inch squares at twenty-five meters and adjust the sight so the shots strike at the bottom of the black . Then when I go to a hundred yards I click the sights back two clicks and double check where it's hitting . Once I find how many clicks it takes for a hundred yards , I'll shoot it again on another day to confirm them . If the rifle takes ten clicks for a hundred yards , I put the sight on the bottom then loosen the screw and turn the elevation pinion to the hundred yard mark . Then just continue to turn the pinion forward ten clicks ( or whatever your hundred yard zero is ) . Next hold the pinion and tighten it good , when you click the sight back to the hundred yard mark it will have moved the amount of clicks you put on it . Most rifles I've shot tend to take the number of clicks the yardage calls for . If I change from two hundred to three hundred I add three clicks . From that yardage to four hundred I add four more . Haven't tried it past six hundred . Jack

Center the windage, elevation 10 clicks up from dead bottom. I shoot for the center of my target board, which is about 3 feet square. The first hole is usually easy to find. Make any necessary adjustment and fire again. After the 2nd shot I'm usually near enough center to go for one of the 4 SR-1 bulls and final adjusments. I find that the old Highpower shooters "Come Up's Rule of Thumb" works just fine. From 100 to 200: Come up 1-2 MOA From 200 to 300: Come up 2-3 MOA more From 300 to 600: Come up 11 MOA more When putting new shooters on the line at a match this formulae always works to get them in the black with their sighters..... regardless of rifle, caliber, or ammo. Posts: 116 Sep 5 05 7:02 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	i just received a field grade from the odcmp about 2 weeks ago. everything looks good after giving it a good field strip with the exception of the rear sight. it wiggles quite a bit, especially when dialed up for long range. i tightened the tension on the windage screw but it didn't help. any advice?

Normal with 99% of issue M1's..... Tension is not the issue here (excepting that if the leaf spring cover is not tight things are worse), it's parts tolerance. The aperture rack is made to fit loosely in the curved track in the sight base. It moves from side to side when you wiggle it with your fingers. Normal. Tension from the spring cover keeps things centered (mostly). There are some things that you can do to tighten up the sight base, such as annealing it, then squeezing it to fit the aperture rack a bit tighter. Instructions for this can be found in Kuhnhausen's Shop Manual, as well as other books on accurizing the M1. Best to all, Swampy Garands forever

Posts: 116 Sep 8 05 6:56 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	thanks for the tip, swampy. i am pretty sure something is way out of normal tolerance with it as the 3 other garands and the MI-A i have, exhibit nothing like the "wiggle" this one does. the cover that surrounds the aperature is also loose. i am pretty confident it would adversely affect accuracy at anything past 50 yards.

This is your problem... and WHY the aperture itself is loose enough to wiggle. Put a new, tight spring cover on the sight and the looseness of the entire unit will go away. I recurved my spring cover by squishing it in a vice with a round metal rod in the concave side and a piece of thick rubber on the convex side. Re-arched it a bit more, test fit, re-arched a little more, etc., until it was tight. Crunch

Posts: 116 Sep 12 05 5:48 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	i shimmed the spring cover with couple of thin strips of aluminum from my favorite beverage can. the shims are out of sight, and everything tightened up pretty well. i will put a couple hundred rounds through the gun this coming weekend to see how things hold up. if that doesn't work, i will try recurving the spring cover. thanks for the advice, swampy and crunch.

Don't bother. M-1 sight parts are easy to come by and relatively inexpensive. Bad parts get changed. Attempting to fix parts you can replace inexpensively is daft.

Have been running tests with new rifle, getting ready for 2006 season, the rifle (M1) is built around a Barnett/Douglas (BDB) Match Grade Military Contoured Barrel (JCG Legal). Sweet! Eight clicks up and point of impact is dead on 10 ring. As you pointed out above" Depends on the tolerances in the parts! " Always nice to read good solid information. Then just use the elevation settings instead of "counting clicks"? It works for me with M1s and M1A/M14s. Of course it helps to have M1/M2/M72 or M80/M118 equivelent loads. The weak M2 stuff (LC69 for instance) at 2550 to 2625 fps doesn't correlate to well to the elevation settings at longer range. M2 bullets at an honest 2700 fps do well out to 600 yards and M72 does quite well all the way to 1000 yards. M80 bullets loaded to 2600 fps in the '06 do well to 800 yards (farthest I've tested them so far) in M1s and M1903A1s with the sight settings. Larry Gibson

BUT, no serious M1 shooter worth the gas from a can of pintos will rely on the knob to not come loose at the most inappropriate time. NO serious Highpower competitor relies on the numbers on the wheel. All that I've ever known or heard tell of count clicks up from bottom. It's the ONLY sure way to KNOW that you have your zero correct. If (when... remember Murphy) the wheel comes loose in the middle of a match and you do not have your clicks up from dead bottom written down and stored near the rifle you are screwed. There is no way to get back on target short of a re-zeroing regimen. If, as most serious M1 shooters do, you have the clicks written down and available all you have to do is re-tighten the elevation knob, run it to bottom, and count back up to be right back where you should be. The rest of the match is saved. I own LOTs of M1's. I don't depend on the elevation wheel markings for the zero on any of them. I have all their zeros written down as "clicks up from dead bottom" in a notebook that is always in my range gear. The pretty little numbers on the elevation wheel are just useless decoration as far as I'm concerned. Hey... that's just my 2 bits.... Best to all, Swampy Garands forever

NOW COMES PART 2- Now I've got a CMP Danish lendlease with a VAR (?) barrel {Anyone know what the --- a VAR barrel means?}. I bought a new National Match front sight (they'r cheep) and I want to file down the front sight blade so that when I go to the range to 0 the rifle [In South Florida we only have 100yd ranges --space is expensive--] I'm only coming up a minimum amount of clicks, around 5>7 ,I plan to shoot 1000 and I want to minimize the effect of aperature wiggle when the sight is run up for that range. I'll appreciate any commentary either pro or con and also any other suggestions. I plan to use hand loads, with 167gr Lapua Scenar-silver. @ 2700/2750 fps. I've got one of those gas-regulating lock screws so I can regulate or eliminate gas preasure on the operating rod and hand cycle the rounds. THANKS for listening--SNEAKY

He hasn't touched one since Korea. Perhaps he'll show me other tricks. It does work out on a ballistics calculator, and the trajectory looks like that's good battle zero. 6.18" @ 160 yards. Front sight is 7/8" high off the barrel. After much reading, inspired by all the virtues and wisdom of the design, I recently got the first Garand and will order a second soon. CMP is back in business. These are absolutely brilliant. Everything about it just feels so natural. I love this rifle.

Posts: 1 Jan 11 12 8:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I use the attached 50 yeard sight in target with M2 HXP ammo from the CMP. I found it online last year. The design comes from the old military targets that used to require old M72 (?) match ammo. Use a ruler and the inch markings on the left side to make sure you printed it to scale. This thing is idiot proof: Put the front sight below the bulls eye on the line. Adjust windage 2 clicks per inch, then calibrate your elevation to the corresponding level. Done.
