Load for the 7.7 Jap |

Has anyone here used 150gr. bullet with Varget? I checked Hodgdon's site and they do not show any loads using Varget for the 7.7 Jap.

Don't sweat that. I one time asked the head ballistician of Spear "why doesn't your new manual include Unique for the .45 Colt?" His answer was "There is only so much room in a book. If it works, that's good enough."
Makes sense. All you need to do is select another cartridge near the same case capacity and load to the minimum of that case and work up. eb

Thanks eb
I've used Varget in .303 and 8x57 and it worked good so I will work up some loads for the 7.7 Jap. |

+1 on what Eb said. Before I could find any reliable data for reloading the 8x56R, I noticed that the capacity of this cartridge was almost identical to the 8x57 Mauser cartridge so I used the minimum load for the 8x57 and worked it up. I did talk to a technician at Sierra about this, and although they had never worked up any data for the 8x56R, he said what I wanted to do made sense. He did warn about going up to the maximum 8x57 load because he felt that the straight pull action was not as strong as the Mauser action.

The Arisaka actions may be strong but I stay with moderate loads to be safe.
You can make cases from 8mm brass if you keep the head agains the bolt when fire formsing or from 30-06 brass and trim to length. I use the Lee 7.7 Jap full length sizing die set. |

Loads for the 7.65X53 would be mild for the 7.7 Arisaka.
If forming cases from 8X57, don't resize full length; adjust the die so that the case will barely chamber snugly. You'll have a semi-shoulder in the neck area that will hold the case against the bolt face. 'holic |

akitaholic is right. For fire forming, partial size the 8mm case so there is a small shoulder on the neck that will hold the case against the bolt.
I also remember putting a thin strip of tape around the case web to hold the case centered in the chamber because fire forming will expand the case slightly and you want even expansion. This all sounds more complicated that it actually is. |
