Here are a couple neat Browning .22 autos, as JM Browning originally designed them, in the original FN factory boxes. This is in my opinion about as small, simple and svelte as a .22 can be produced. These .22's are popularly known as the "Toploader" due to the loading port in the top of the pistol grip. Produced by FN beginning 1914.
Compare to the post 1956 example in this thread. Note the loading port is moved to the right side of butt stock. Overall, the new rifle is slightly larger due to the change in stocking. http://parallaxscurioandrelicfirearmsforums.yuku.com/topic/36971
The pair are a .22 Short and a .22 Long Rifle, serial numbers 18715 and 106747 respectively. Try as I might, I have not been able to date these. I believe certainly prior to 1956. Barrels are marked .22 short smokeless and .22 long rifle smokeless. That may aid in dating, 20's-30's perhaps? I would be greatful if any members can supply further infomation on these "Toploaders". I have Homer Tyler's two books, "Browning .22 Caliber Rifles 1914-1984" & "Browning .22 Caliber Rifles 1914-1991, © 1985 & 1991 respectively. Unfortunately he only mentions the "Toploaders" briefly.
