I was wondering if it is feasible to take military surplus 7.62x54r ammo, often in steel cases, and pull the bullet, reduce the power charge and reinstall the bullet to make some lower power loads that wife and kids could tolerate. I suspect it would be possible with modern brass cased ammo, but can it be done with steel cased ammo?

Posts: 1317 Jun 30 10 9:18 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	If you buy the Russian light ball so commonly available right now, you won't need to reduce it. Maybe get a slip-on rubber recoil pad. Recoil is very mild in my Finn M39, should not be too bad even in a carbine. Crunch

What I have found in the closet is... 174gr Hungarian 180gr S&B Czech silver tip (I don't know the weight). Bulgarian from AIM or SOG (I don't know the weight). I suppose I could pull a bullet on the Czech and Bulgarian and see what weight they are. Different caliber, but I did find some 147gr 8mm that I forgot I had. This stuff should be nicer than the old Turk 8mm I have been shooting.

Posts: 106 Jul 10 10 9:54 PM active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	If you don't reload or have the equipment to your options are limited,a nice recoil pad like a Kick Killer will help http://www.cabelas.com/p-0012757.shtml Most of the Surplus ammo is loaded on the warm side to begin with so reducing the charge by a couple grs. helps more with the accuracy than the recoil. All my surplus Bulgarian 54r is brass case so it easy to work with as far as pulling it down and remanufacturing it. If you reloaded you can use powders like Red Dot,Alliant 2400 or TrailBoss with cast or jacketed bullets and knock about 1000+ fps off the muzzle velocity and shoot all day like it was a 22rf. A reduction of 10% is a safe limit and substantially reduces felt recoil. I have reduced as much as 15% with very good results and no problems. As to neck tention. Try is as is. If you need to then use the roll crimp or factory crip die.

I think all my other ammo is heavy ball, but can't really be sure on some of it. Hope light ball helps. I think I'll like it, but wife and kids may still complain. I personally would not shoot Corrosive surplus in an SVT-40 until you are intimately familiar with full disassembly and cleaning procedures... You certainly don't want to rust up the innards of a $1,500 rifle... Back on to the OP question... Sure - theoretically, you could reduce the load by a teeny bit... like less than 10% reduction..... That assumes you have all the proper reloading equipment necessary to do so... Without a minimum of reloading equipment - no, you can't safely pull down ammo and reload it on your bench... But... If you do have the reloading equipment - why not work up a proper reduced load or load up a proven, accurate reduced velocity cast bullet load.... The old standard 180-200 g GC Lead slug over 16g of 2400 powder is a honey of a load... Accurate and almost no kick... Thanks

I fired some & agreed that it seemed like pretty stout stuff (ZV 58 headstamp). I reduced powder in several trials & settled on reducing from 43.5 gr down to 39.5 gr. Today, it's still the most accurate ammo I have - better than the 80's Russkie Sniperski stuff everyone was so enthralled with. Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool.

It seems to work well enough at 100 yards, not sure how much further it would stay accurate. Just checked and there doesn't seem to be any available at places I buy ammo. In fact, surplus ammo seems to be flying off the shelves, last month had lots of choices and now....not so much.
