Posts: 16 Jan 7 11 7:17 PM More My Recent Posts	Tags : bubba, swedish Greetings, I couldn't resist buying what appears to be a Swedish Mauser today, chambered in 8x57. There isn't really much in the way of markings other than the crowns and a few numbers and what appears to be an import mark. The tag at the store said "Carl Gustav 8x57" but I don't see any evidence to support that. The action feels excellent. Now that buyers remorse is setting in, I'm wondering just what I have here. Posts: 2015 Jan 7 11 7:49 PM Veteran member More My Recent Posts	In some ways it looks much like a Swedish Inspectors rifle, but the overruns in the checkering pattern and Swedish crown stamps sort of make this unlikely. So I would say that it is a Swedish M96 that has been turned into a hunting rifle, resembling one of the rare early Inspectors rifles. Hope you didn't pay too much, but if the bore is good it will likely be a great shooter.

Posts: 1 Jan 12 11 5:58 PM More My Recent Posts	I would go back and get it. That is a nice rifle for $200. It is a commercial hunting rifle bulit with military parts. Swedish of course. I have one of these in 8X54. It is a Euro wildcat for hunting moose based on the 6.5x55 case that the Norweigian Krag actions could handle. It also might be in 8X56 Krag if the 8x57 Mauser was too long to chamber. I love oddball cartridges and that is a great action already put together and set up!

It looks a bit like a Model 46 Husqvarna but since it is not marked as a Husqvarna then I would say it is a private rifle purchased from the Swedish govenment and modified by Vapen Depoten into some 8mm cartridge. They are usually pretty accurate. I don't have any Vapen Depoten rifles but I do have some of the Husqvarna sporter rifles built on 98 FN action. They carry well and usually pretty accurate. Posts: 2 Dec 23 12 10:19 PM More My Recent Posts	I have a similar thou rougher rifle. It has the same scrubbed 94/96 action, same rebore military barrel. Mine is cut at 28". Stock is unusually nice fiddle back walnut military stock that has a addition of a round knob pistol grip. Cleaning rod hole is filled as well. I had thought my rear sight was a replacement, but seeing yours it may well be original. I bought it represented as a 8x51mm. It is not. It is chambered in 8x54mm Krag-Jorgensen as I would suspect yours is as well. I make cases from 6.5x55, which is the parent case, not a .308win case head size.

If I recall correctly, I paid $275.00 for it and it came from Allan's Armory. The Swede who owned either didn't use it much or took very good care of it. The bore is mint. Posts: 2 Feb 9 13 2:38 AM More My Recent Posts	I have a rifle that is virtually identical but is marked "Carl Gustafs Stads","Gevärsfaktori","1898".Numbers match,little crowns everywhere, very pretty figured stock with schnabel fore end and clearly marked "8x57" on the barrel.It likewise has "Simpson Ltd" faintly electropenciled on the barrel.If you visit the Simpson Ltd website they have a number of sporterized Mausers.

As I see it, there's no harm in asking. When rifles have been modified a long time ago in some other country, it can be difficult to determine what the history was. I have a friend who bought what I assume was sporterized German 98 Mauser of some sort and finished the work that had been begun on it. This fellow is a craftsman both in steel and wood and the results are simply stunning. I've never seen anything like it. He had it at the range this past Thursday to test fire. The caliber is 7.92 x 57. It shot just over an inch at 100 yards!! If it had been a military rifle, I'm sorry it was messed with; he wouldn't do that either but he took a sow's ear and turned it into a silk purse. Carl

As a site moderator you now this forum is not to discuss permanantly altered military rifles. It does allow discussion of sporter rifles made as sporters from conception. It does not matter to me where bubba is from, how good a job he did or when it was done. We dont discuss in great detail m/94-14's that have the date scrubbed by Interarmsco and 33/50 stamped in it's place. Other than the date being scubbed they are still in full military garb. This rifle surpassed that way back. Unless Bill has changed the rules and not notified me I think I'm correct. Regards, Jim Host and moderator of "this" forum.
