Perhaps the simplest type of paper musket cartridge manufactured during the Civil war would have been the Confederate Gardner cartridge.
This had a paper tube joined directly to the base of the bullet and once
the tail was torn off the whole affair was stuffed down the bore. An excellent idea hampered by poor quality. hollows in the cast bullets nose tended to blow out or cause the bullet to tumble. The whole thing was abandoned
by the Confederates late in the war. More on this one in a separate
topic.
