Posts: 622 May 1 12 5:57 PM active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Hey all, I was at my gun clubs meeting the other day and I over heard an interesting idea for loading 8x56r. There are these rich snob type guys who were talking in their little group that one of them loaded rounds using black powder. I would have asked this Guy about it but, they are the type that if you don't fit in their little group they are either rude to you or they have nothing to deal with you. But I was wondering if this idea would work safley? I already reload for 8x56 using cast bullets and reduced charges but, that idea got me thinking. Any thoughts on the idea? Mike

I was doing some research and correct me if I am wrong but from my understanding is that the 8x50 round was originally a black powder round. And the 8x56 was redesigned from the 8x50 so I am thinking that it could work. Mike

Posts: 4619 May 6 12 4:40 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think it's a bad idea. The 8x50R was never a BP round. Prior to the 8x50R M1895 Mannlicher Steyr, the various M1886/88 and M1886/90 Steyrs fired a 8x52 cartridge which was "semi-smokeless". The original M1886 MS rifles in 11mm were BP cartridge guns. I have loaded 32-20 Win rounds in BP just to see how they would perform, and I must confess even a reduced smokeless powder load is much more efficient than BP..... Not only is gun cleaning more of a headache. You also have to wash your brass promptly after shooting since the BP residue will quickly corrode the brass. There is also a safety concern. IIRC, BP loads are supposed to be compressed in the case; having an air space under the bullet can be dangerous.

Won’t do it again unless I want to surprise some one 1903-A3 Lyman 311291 case full of DuPont 1-F, tapped down, added more, let the bullet compress it. Biggest fire ball I have seen out of a small bore rifle, felt like it was scorching my face. Sounded like the crack of doom. Kicked like a mule, made 12 bore slugs seem tame. 5 or 10 rounds standing, no accuracy to speak of, couldn’t hit the target, couldn’t see where they were hitting because of the smoke screen. Cartridge cases were thrown out, blistered my hand picking one up, figured they had just gone through an annealing process. Burned my hand on the barrel and could faintly smell charred wood. Some cartridges were designed for black powder and some weren’t.

Posts: 68 May 8 12 2:56 PM active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	If using a cast bullet, the lube would be important for any kind of accuracy. No petroleum based products like parafin or ALOX. Beeswax and Crisco might work.

Personally, I think that retro-ing a round with blackpowder is beyond stoopid. Maybe you could suggest they put a Ford Pinto engine in their Porsches.
