Posts: 4 May 27 12 10:59 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Hello everyone. I just wanted to show off my new babys and ask for any info you would be willing to share. I know the factory on the No.1 Mk3 (SSA) and the No.4 Mk2 is scrubbed so no way of telling much about it that I know. By what I can find it seems to have been in Canadian use by the C with an arrow in it but so many of the other markings I cant find anything on. It does appear to be numbers matching unless there is one Im missing. (bolt, barrel, receiver, nose, under sight) Any info would be great. Thanks in advance, Dan

Posts: 4319 May 28 12 11:08 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Welcome Dan. Interesting SMLE; I seldom see one marked for the Dominion of Canada and your rifle must have a very interesting history. You have most of the important information in hand already. Most of the markings are inspectors' marks or batching numbers (47E on the action body otherwise hidden by the bolt handle root. 'U' on bolt head indicates a nonstandard part. 'V' is, of course, part of the serial number. The 'D' and 7877 have a different serif from the serial number...the broadarrow appears to have '28' with it..I don't believe that it indicates a replacement barrel in '28 because the serif of the 'V 5010 on the barrel looks very much like those on the action ring but struck differently, but I am often corrected... Is it a Paschendael/Ypres/Villiers veteran? Might be but my place/time frames may be off for a 1917 SMLE. Interesting and very nice rifle. Posts: 4 May 29 12 11:41 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Forgot the stock markings an E on the butt and a X on the handguard in front of the magazine. Any ideas on the meanings? Unfortunatly I cant make out the numbers on the bottom front of the handguard. Again any info is greatly appreciated Im excited to learn as much as I can on this old girl hoping to shoot her Thursday. Dan

Posts: 4319 May 31 12 6:27 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	So, Dan, how did the shooting go? 'E' and 'X' - I don't know. Are you certain that the 'X' is not crossed penants? Buttstocks were often stamped with 'B' (Bantam length), 'S' (Short length) and 'L' (Long length). Posts: 80 Jun 13 12 6:50 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'll add a little info that you may already know. This is what is referred to as a "Peddled Scheme" rifle. SSA (Standard Small Arms) was not able to produce complete rifles due to management issues and unskilled labor; however, they were able to produce receivers, trigger guards, bolts, and barrels. The SSA receivers, trigger guards, bolts, and barrels were shipped to the Royal Small Arms Factory @ Enfield were the were assembled (that is why you see the EFD inspector marks). As far as the No4 Mk2, the only info I can give you is that they were made at ROF-Fazakerley from 1949 until 1956 (PF rifles from 1949-55 and UF rifles from 1955-56).
