Hello Folks:
I'm really glad I've discovered this forum. I've been looking at an M48 in my local shop. Under the cosmoline, it appears to be a pretty nice rifle with matching numbers. But I've been reading about how some M48s have been pieced together from parts. Not that I would have a problem with this at the right price for a project gun. But it's priced for a "unissued" rifle. Are there any clues and/or stamps I should be looking for?

To answer your question, first and foremost, look for matching numbers. If one part doesn't match, that's not really uncommon. Even a bolt mismatch is really no big deal.

Another thing to look for is a stamp "BK" usually in a circle but sometimes w/in a rectangle. That "BK" is actually Cyrillic for our ("Latin") alphabet's "VK" for vojna kontrola. military control. It should be stamped on most if not all of the parts. I say "most" because some stamps may be in locations only visible with disassembly.

If you were in PA, you should have stopped by SARCO and picked up a couple Mausers from them!
