Posts: 2 Jul 16 12 3:03 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Seems you're right. Very strange indeed. But I suppose the knife made it all the way over there. My father, who fought in the French Foreign Legion found it, used by a Tuareg soldier. I'm not sure about the production year, but it would be interesting to trace. I imagine, it could have ended up there either by use from one of the Legionnaires, or possibly German/Norwegians soldiers fighting in the Africa Corp. Strange thing about it, is the insignia on it. Which is clearly not, the standard "K" with the added crown on it. Instead, three letters entwined. "DHL" I believe. The above letters is hard to make out.

The Norwegian Krag M1894 and later 1896 and 97 type rifles were sometimes captured by German soldiers. There is also documentation (and examples in South African museums) indicating use in the 2nd Boer War (1899-1902), by the Boers. Posts: 991 Jul 17 12 5:08 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Your bAyonet is a post WWI conversion of the 1894 to fit the US M1 rifle, be very suprised if used in Africa as Norway didnt have colonies there and even more suprised if th eKrag was used in the Boer war which by the dates provided finished before the bayonet was designed in 1894. Never buy the story unless there is documented proof and be very wary of Museums as they often buyt the story of the supplier. There is a nice colelction in a local resturaunt of pieces from the Texan wars with Mexico that includes a French Gras from years after the action was completed - there is even a 1975 date on the spine. goto www.old-smithy.info and see my example picked up in Norway. The information you provide may well be true, and the bayonet may not have been from Africa, but I responded to the claim of the poster, and the information I gave is nontheless true, regardless. I quoted the use of the Krags in the Boer Wars to indicate the rifles were "there" and "1899-1902" is actually after 1894..... I think it is factual that some Norwegian Krags were used in the 2nd Boer War. How they were acquired would not depend on Norwegian colonies.

When I read the explanation of the conversion for the M1 Rifle, it appeared to me that the vertical distance from barrel ring to bayonet lug wasn't far enough for the Garand.
