Can some one fill me in on the barrel and receiver stamps, Like the ( S42) and the Lion. and the eagle . picture 3 looks like a loin picture 4 eagle with wings down picture 7 has the S42 and a star picture 9 I have no clue

The rifle would have been made for WWI with a 29 inch barrel, and then reworked (the S42 stamp) for WWII and shortened to 23". Also suggesting that is the later rear sight. I suspect some person then took a full-length Gew98 stock and cut it off at the FWD barrel band, and slotted the band for the front sight base. Crunch

Posts: 1317 Jul 23 12 9:27 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm not an expert in these pre-WWII conversions where they pretty much updated WWI Gew98's to K98k configuration. But I would think a pre-WWII solid walnut K98k stock with a flat buttplate and early barrel bands should get you pretty close. Crunch

IA cut them back, fitted the "mannlicher" type front end, and sold them as "Hunting Carbines" The "M" part is the 1934-35 conversion to sS flat rear sight from the Lange (s) rear sight of WW I.( official German refurbish) As an "Interarms" sporter, it has some legitimacy as a collectible of "Factory-converted Milsurp" ( like Bannerman Mosins, PH Lee Enfields, Golden State Lee Enfields, Riva Carcanos, and a host of other "Factory/Importer Bubbas," which follow a constant Pattern. The attempt to "rebuild it" into a Kar98k, makes it simply a Bubba...no collectible value at all. regards, Doc AV PSD, the Lion stamp denotes Firing Proof by AMBERG GewhrFabrik, Bavaria; the S/42G is the Coded 1934 mark for Mauser Oberndorf, and is usually found on new rear sight bases etc of the Gew98M refurbs (Most done 1934-36, with some spare parts parts lasting til W W II) Last Edited By: Doc AV Nov 13 12 10:45 PM. Besides it is your rifle and you do with it as you wish. Enjo7y it as a shooter and remember it is still a piece of history and should be treated as such.

Posts: 30 Nov 15 12 3:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	As long as the parts are all German period manufacture, then it is a legitimate piece, in my estimation. In todays collectors market/world, untouched all matching numbers military 98K's and Gew 98's are hard to find and expensive. Long gone are the days of the $20.00 German Mausers that filled the gun racks of pawn shops and gun stores. So many of them were turned into hunting rifles because it was cheap way to own a superb rifle at just the fraction of the costs of a Remington or Winchester. In my opinion, if you have a Mauser that the Barrel, receiver nd possibily the bolt, trigger guard or one or the other match then you have a legidimate Mauser.

No, it can never be original again. But, to a bottom feeding collector, that is, a collector with holes in his pockets and little to spend, might well find this 'representative' rifle very desirable. I personally can't see too many people here or on G'boards getting to eager to 'collect' it in it's "hunting carbine" configuration. They are largely driven by price , availabilty aqnd a personal sense of need. One must be careful when critizing someone elses items, as they open themselves up for critisim.
