Posts: 5 Sep 8 12 1:56 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I'm new here, about to get my C&R FFL and have a couple of collectable weapons already in house. This one is my dad's WW2 bring back Arisaka. I'd love to hear some comments on it. I've shot it before, have a Lee Loader for 7.7mm but it's just been in the closet for the last 10 years or so. Posts: 2483 Sep 9 12 10:14 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Looks like a very nice Type 99 manufactured by the Kokura Arsenal. Couldn't see the serial number or series kanji to figure out when it was made. If you choose, you can add a cleaning rod and dust cover to complete the rifle, or just clean and oil it "as is." The Japanese Type 99 Arisaka is a quite underrated bolt gun as it wasn't as well finished as the earlier Type 38, however the Arisaka action is just about the strongest bolt action ever made. The ground mum pretty much determines that your dad received the rifle after the end of the war. Rifles with mum's were virtually all battlefield captures. Only after the war were the mum's required to be ground off. And as far as I'm concerned, I still have never received a satisfactory explanation of who, or why, the mum's were required to be ground off. Too many stories, all plausible. All the sailors loaded up on trophies but after they got underway, they were allowed to only keep one. This is the one he chose. Posts: 51 Sep 19 12 10:09 AM active member Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	McArthur ordered that all mum's had to be ground after the surrender as a face saving gesture to the Emperor of Japan. A lot of rifles got out of Japan with full mum's by being shipped home in the mail. It was customary that rifle's being brought home by troop's returning by ship that the mum's on these rifle's had to be ground before they were allowed on the troop ship home. My dad is a WW.2 Army vet and was in a good many of the island campaign's and sent home three rifles with full mums by mail. He picked up two rifles in Japan the mum's on those two rifles had to be ground before he was allowed to bring them on the ship. Also on another note one reason a lot of rifles with miss matched bolts was when they boarded the troop ship's there was a 55 gallon barrel's on deck and as each man boarded the ship he had to remove the bolt from his rifle and drop it in the barrel where they stayed until they got back to the states. When the men were leaving the ship they took a bolt from the barrel so the chance's of getting the same bolt back were very slim to non.

Shortly before Sept 2nd, his company landed to occupy the IJN Yokosuka Naval Arsenal (He & another veteran Marine raised the first US flag post-1941 on Japanese soil.) Father-in-law said Yokosuka was full of naval enlisted personnel and a few sr. petty officers (not a commissioned officer in sight) who were defacing the Imperial mum from every piece of ordinance or equipment on the arsenal property or in the harbor.] My father-in-law was a sr squad leader by the time of Yokosuka occupation, and one of his men was traded a rifle by some Japanese in exchange for food. When the squad members tried firing the rifle into the harbor, the action exploded. [sure enough, it was a "blanks-only" school trainer.] Because of that instance, father-in-law chose 2 swords as his bring-back mementos. cheers, peterNaCl
