Almost didnt go this past Saturday afternoon with the warm weather that had blown in, but Bryant hadn't got to go any last week because of school work so we went.
He sat on a nice old logging road that cuts across a travel corridor. You can shoot about 100 yds down this stretch of the logging road
I sat in a ground blind about 200 yds from him in some thick stuff. It had already gotten dark enough where I was at that I was out of the blind and gathering my stuff up. I knew he could see a bit longer than me where he was at so I wasnt in any hurry to get over to him.
I hear one pop, then it is quiet again. When I get over to him, he is pretty excited and tells me that he is pretty sure it was a buck...my instructions had been to only shoot a good six or bigger. I ask him what happened before we go down the lane so I could get a good idea of what kind of search we would be in for. He said it dropped, rolled on the ground a few times, and stumbled to its feet, then stumbled out of the road...said he was hit really good. We get to where he was thrashing in the road, and as I'm looking for blood in the road, he says...Hey dad..LOOK! old boy fell out the road and was done.
Little rifle he shoots is a Savage model 340C chambered in 30-30 shooting 110 grain sierra varminter HP's handloads. Deer went all of 5 yds...
180 pound, 8 point. He has only killed a few does and 2 spike bucks. Very happy he was able to contain his buck fever and get this one!![]()
