I was in Grand Rapids, MI this past weekend and was in a Meijer store on another errand and spotted a John Wayne DVD pack for $7.99. This wasn't the usual 1930's "B" movies, but was The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Sons of Katie Elder, and The Shootist. All some of his better movies smiley: eek

John Wayne is an icon of the silver screen. What a great actor he was. We often think of him beginning with "Stagecoach" in the late 30's, but he was in alot of early stuff in the mid to late 20's too. He was so good that you never got tired of seeing him and no matter how many great, believable roles he portrayed as a soldier or cowboy, he never really got stereotyped as either, and he was always fresh. So many fantastic westerns and war movies. Far too many to enumerate. I loved the "Quiet Man" very much too. His on screen chemistry with Maureen O'Hara (also a fantastic actress) was legendary. We're so fortunate to have old movies still available to entertain us. Newer productions very seldom "stack up" compared to the 30's-60's stuff. If it weren't for TCM, I probably wouldn't bother with satellite TV.

Ah, "the Duke", perhaps a definitive use of the word iconic!

I actually think many of his rolls and much of his acting touch on hokey, but that is part of his ethos and his charm in my opinion! In some of his movies I find comedic bits that I'm not sure were actually intended to be, although he did have much humor built into many of his parts! North to Alaska (mostly filmed a few miles from me) certainly had much humor in it intentionally, at least I think it was intentional, and actually reminds me a bit of "Paint Your Wagon"!

Hope this isn't sounding to demeaning or dismissive to the legend. I'll simply add that I do very much like and admire him, as the couple of dozen of his movies that I own, should well attest!!!

For a while, the big brawl comic relief was a standard feature of his films. Remember McClintock! Talk about politically incorrect! The old Chief strolling through the melee untouched say "Whiskey all Gone, we go now!" and spanking a woman with an ash shovel?! I don't think we'll ever see that one on TV again! smiley: eek

(For some strange reason, my wife doesn't like that movie, not that she's a John Wayne fan in particular.)
