After having collected more modern arms (i.e. post 1900) I've recently become interested in antique rifles. I know absolutely nothing about French rifles (focus of my collection has primarily been Russian, Finnish, American, Swedish, British) and have come across an all matching Model 1866/74 with a bayonet and scabbard; I'm told the bayonet matches the scabbard (seller said the bayonet is "all matching") but the bayonet does not match the rifle. Stock has not been sanded or refinished, cartouches on both sides of the stock are all present and clear. I've only seen one photo and it appears to have a noticeable patina (certainly not a bright, in the white finish anyhow) and I've been told the bore is "excellent." At this point that's all I know about this rifle. Asking price is $550. Is that a reasonable/fair price for a rifle like this?
Thanks in advance for any assitance. (And someone should have told me in advance that antique weapons are just as addictive as 20th Century weapons.
)Cheers,
~ Greg ~
