Has anybody tried any of the 7.5 French that has been popping up on the various ammo sites? (aimsurplus to be specific) I enjoy shooting my MAS 36 but have been wary of french surplus in general after a terrible lot of 8mm lebel I bought a few years back...

As Patrick says, the French surplus is excellent. Some of the Syrian 7.5 MAS is also excellent but some is not so good. I don't think the Syrian stuff is commonly available today.

Ammunition, regardless of maker, suffers throughout time, if not properly stored. Ammunition should be stored in a cool (not freezing), well ventilated, low humidity environment. If such is done it will last years and years.

Some surplus ammunition may have received care that didn't meet this criteria at all times, so may exhibit signs of deterioration such as corrosion. This doesn't mean it won't fire, it only means it has some corrosion. Yet it is an indicator that the ammunition has been "compromised" in matters of storage, which can effect the primer.

If the ammunition is clean, it will more likely than not fire just fine. You may get a misfire, but generally that's not attributable to poor storage, but a degraded primer, that will occur naturally over time. A matter of percentages. If the ammunition has some corrosion due to storage problems, it will more likely than not still shoot, but the possibility of a bad primer are increased. Really bad looking ammunition is a crap shoot. The moisture that attacked the case has also had ample opportunity to attack the primer, and not all primer sealants work forever.

I'm just guessing here, but I don't think that 8mm Lebel ammunition looked all that good. And if it looked new? Then that lot of ammunition wasn't made all that well in the first place.

Eb is correct, that was an excellent description.

When it comes to the 8mm Lebel ammo, it came out of, IIRC, the Middle East and had been stored very poorly. I got a large amount of it from Gibbs - 500 rounds - at a reasonable price (they weren't giving it away) and most of it hung fire but in general it at least went off.

That 8x50R mm 'Lebel' ammo that is loaded on Hotchiss chargers came out of French Guiana where the high humidity killed the primers

There ya go Patrick, French Guiana - my memory is not as good as it used to be. *sigh* At 10 cents a round I took 500 rounds and was not totally displeased, most does "go bang", just be patient.... smiley: eek

I've sold several of the empty feed strips at $3 each, at that price they moved quickly.
