I am attempting to replace the rear sight on my #4 mk1. On the first one I order from gun parts and all was fine. On the 2nd one the sight that they sent would not fit. The sight, where the pin goes in is .750 and it needs to be .865 from side to side. The first sight they sent me looked to be milled, the 2nd sight looks to be stamped. These are the ladder sights. I am trying to replace the flip sights on the #4 mk1's. I sent the to small sight back to gun part and told them the story and they sent me another sight that was again 2 small. Can someone help me.

that sight needs a spacer , i dont have any of my referances here to show what im saying , but perhaps someone else will drop in to help

Where would you get the spacer and would it go on the left or right?

After looking at the picture and thinking just a little, I built a spacer from a brass nut that was just thick enough. I drilled out the middle to the right size and rounded the edge and it works like a charm. Thanks for the help.

In my experience in dealing with Numrich/Gun Parts, the company seems to have some significant difficulty with supplying the Mk.1 milled steel backsight, adjustable to 1300yds unless beat over the brow with the information that a "Mk.1, milled steel backsight, adjustable for 1300yds" is specified. Otherwise, the buyer too often winds up with the Mk.1 milled steel adjustable sight for 800yds (No.5 rifle) or one of the stamped Mk.3 or Mk.4 backsights. British war-time Mk.1 rifles almost always were issued with or came out of FTR with the milled steel Mk.1 backsight. The stamped steel Mk.3 and Mk.4 backsights were, IIRC, post-war sights. I believe that wartime backsights on U.K. built rifles were typically Mk.1 with many Savage and some Long Branch rifles issued with the Mk.2 backsight as wartime expedients to the Mk.1.

I only call Gun Parts when I have no other options. Unless you know exactly what you want and can give them their catalog item number and description, you are made to feel that your are imposing on them...! I prefer to call Springfield Sporters (http://www.ssporters.com/) for Lee Enfields. The guy answering the phone is helpful and is nice to deal with, and they mail your order right away.

Forgot to say that the 'correct' sight on a U.K. manufactured No.4, Mk.1 is the Mk.1 backsight. As an 'aside', I have always wondered at the actual combat use of the Mk.1's magnificently adjustable sight leaf. Wonder how often the sight leaf was stood up and adjusted for yardage? In a fluid situation, I cannot image fiddling with it to take a shot at some estimated distance; perhaps from a protected position and with a few 'ranging shots'. My personal favorite backsight is the Mk.2 and I think that a rifleman skilled in its use could appreciate the simplicity of it.
