Posts: 154 Nov 12 12 12:38 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Hi all, I finally took the bait, and paid $699.00 for a M1 Carbine at Big 5 Sporting Goods. It's an Inland with an Underwood 4-44 barrel in a WRA GHD stock with a faint crossed cannon. The stock has more than a few dents and dings, but solid. The barrel looks nice and shiny with no pitting. I ran about 50 rounds of Lake City reloads through her at the range on Friday; it was 42 degrees and clear with a slight cross wind. I’ll post a target from 50 yards, 3" group of 10 shoots. Light, handy, holds a good amount of ammunition, accurate to a reasonable distance, and hits hard enough within 100/150 yards to do the job. I'm sure you will enjoy it. I picked up a WW2 M4 Bayonet, a sling and oiler and a canvas carry bag, US marked for it also. I looked at another one this past weekend, it was all Inland and looked like a import from Israel. But it didn't talk to me, and my gun budget is getting low again.

Posts: 26 Dec 16 12 9:06 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	As I had posted a little over a month ago, the price you paid will look like a bargain in a few years or months from now........well, about 2 weeks ago I was at an auction and some fool paid $1200.00 for a National Postal Meter carbine.....looks like it only took WEEKS! The next war will be like a fight with your wife--impossible to win it or end it.

The Big 5 carbine was a mixmaster of little collector value. Not saying it isn't a good gun, or that it will increase in value over time, but certainly not to collector level. I know they were worked on/repaired by military armorers or the CMP. The Winchester I got from Century is a very low serial number, 1004188 with the original dated Winchester barrel and I believe it has the original unmodified "guts" as I call the inner workings; no complaints from me on that!! I think I have most of them except an Irwin-Pederson. I suppose with the current madness their value has increased substantially. Carl

Posts: 27 Dec 30 12 3:28 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The way I look at it, any carbine is a product of it's history since it left the manufacturer back during WW-II. All of mine are mix masters, all get shot on a regular basis. I'll not bother finding parts to force them to be as correct as the day they left the factory bound for battle. Those who choose to do that, it's cool with me. But please, if you do, document what you changed, and document the fact it's not factory correct. Because if you don't, later down the line, when your heirs clean out the gun safe to dispose of your collection, they may well believe it's a truly original model, and try to sell it as such. If an uneducated person chooses to buy it, and finds he bought a forced correct model, at a premium price, he's gonna be mad at someone. Just sayin.......

The fact is, any gun you collect is a collectible gun. The M1 Carbine that started this debate is a run-of-the-mill carbine to a serious American military firearms collector, but it's still a $700 genuine surplus military rifle, and that in itself makes it valuable, interesting and collectible. So you're both right in my book. For the sake of example: How many people own FALs? Now, of those, how many own a FAL built on a (foreign) receiver made in the same country as the rest of the parts? And how many of THOSE are actually in the same condition they left the factory in (i.e. never cut and sold as a parts kit)? Are only the last of these truly collectible? If that's the case, the entry level for 'collecting' the FAL rifle must fall somewhere in the $5000+ range these days. If I had the money I would buy only true-matching rifles in excellent condition, or rifles that can truly be described as "rare". But on my current budget that is not really an option (barring the odd lucky find). Given a normal middle class income, do you want to accumulate a 50-100+ piece collection over the years OR save up and buy one really rare Luger? Last Edited By: Ken Shabby Jan 3 13 7:55 PM. Posts: 210 Jan 6 13 9:56 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Very nice rifle probably from Israel. Last time I was in Israel (2009) The tour buses had a man with an M1 Carbine. They did not have the magazine in the rifle but had the double magazine carrier on the stock. Our tour guide was driving a van, he carried a pistol. I am going back to Israel in the Spring, May 23. I will check to see what the kind of guns the tour guides have.
