Our son in law, a two tour in Iraq veteran having served with the National Guard, has developed mental issues that are possibly related to PTSD. His first tour was tough. The past months have been a roller coaster ride, emotionally draining, and heartbreaking. Our daughter has proven to be tough, determined to get things straightened out, and handled it very maturely for a 24 year old. (The fact that she got a CDL and at 22 years old was driving a semi with a 53' trailer cross country by herself says something!!) If all goes as planned, he will be entering a VA treatment program for PTSD sufferers shortly and I hope and pray that it will be the beginning of healing. Carl

It's often very difficult for our Veterans to deal with what they have to see and must do in combat situations, once they return to their lives and family at home. I pray he will be able to sort out his feelings and get back to normal with the help of friends and family. Treatment will no doubt be a big help. They have made great strides in working with these kind of problems. It's much different than it was after VietNam. Time is a great healer too, and with patience, love and guidance, he will be alright. Good luck to him and my thanks for his sacrifices on our behalf.

Posts: 4319 Nov 15 12 1:31 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I am a senior citizen now but I still clearly remember the 60, 90, 189 day and year-long tours away from my family as a USAF member. Returning home was one hell of a lot harder than going away. Took me weeks to get back into a 'normal' home routine; mowing the lawn, washing the car, taking the kids to school, etc. The easiest part of the transition to 'back home' was being among my fellow airmen, even if they had not had the same experience - there was a comfort and kinship there that did not exist when I was in quarters with my family. I think that the going and coming was like being on a bungee cord and the shifting about was just mind-numbing; like waking up from anesthesia. The saving-grace for me was likely the fact that I never had a real home before I enlisted so I was somewhat accustomed to 'transition'. I think that it is unrealistic for us to expect our young military people to easily transition into and out of their deployments - a bit like the 'abandonment syndrome' for young adults. For me, the worst possible thing to happen would have been separation from service on return to CONUS; my military comrades' company and the familiarity of military routine always allowed me a period of transition that spared my family life. An old Episcopal priest I knew who was in WW II in the infantry and wounded in the Battle of the Bulge believed it was a great advantage to have spent a couple of weeks on a troop ship rather than a quick flight back home. It allowed for decompression and a quiet transition assuming the seas weren't really rough. I think there may some truth to that. Thanks, Ed, for those details about your service. I didn't have any issues upon returning from Vietnam in '71 but I had an office job and it was the most boring year of my life!! Sometimes boring is good. Carl

Posts: 4319 Nov 16 12 3:49 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Carl, I think that the depth of involvement in a wartime situation is an important factor in 'readjustment' but I believe that no matter the type of duty, the effect of adjusting to a new/different life-style and then readjusting to the former life-style is a huge problem for most people, especially for those who completely invest themselves in their most current situation.
