After reading the posts on the direction of your collection thread I got to thinking. I probably do have too many firearms for some one my age (22) , but like others said it is a hobby for me that keeps me happy and out of trouble. So I was thinking that maybe instead of adding to my collection I would try upgrading. So I sold my 10/22 and added money to that sale to get a colt/walther M4 22. I was originally gonna get an AR.but at this point in time I don't have the money. But I will say this my new colt 22 is the best money I ever spent on a 22 very accurate at 100 yards and I feel more confident with this one than the 10/22. Seems to me I shoot better with it and the sites are easier for me to see and use. Yeah its not a cheap 22 and yes people have had trouble with them, but it functions flawlessly. So this could be a new direction for me cause before I did not like to sell them, but I figure it this way if I can be happier upgrading then it sure beats buyers remorse. Of course there are one I will never let go, but as it seems it is all about what makes ya happy and I am. Mike

Posts: 13331 Nov 21 12 2:57 PM Forum Site Moderator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have an old Glenfield bolt .22 I took rabbits, squirrels and ground hogs with when I was a kid, (I think Dad got it around 1970) and it still spits them out just fine. I've been teaching my kids on it now too. Nothing fancy but, it works for us. But as said, whatever makes YOU happy, it's your collection. I finally cleaned off that horrible brown paint from the stock, I figured stained any kind of wood HAD to look better, and guess what I found?! Whoda thunk such purty wood was under that old paint?! It is nice to see that it has been in the family and continues to be a family gun. Now you make me wish I still had my Remington pump 22 that I started with. My dad sold it cause when he gave it to me it had a worn barrel and I made it a smooth bore from shooting it. Accuracy wasn't great, but it was my start. Mike

It was the late 40's or early 50's. The gun was one of those Winchester .22 cal pump rifles, that only shot .22 shorts, I believe it was called a gallery gun. Anyway, being the nostalgic guy I am (right) I've been trying to find one at a reasonable price. I've seen a number of them at gun shows in the $400 to $600 price range which I don't consider reasonable. I'll bet originally they went for $20 or less. Oh well, I'll keep looking. Be thankful we're not getting all the government we're paying for .... Will Rogers

It was an old Savage model 29 pump gun. similar to but somewhat above the gallery guns. Regrettably, that one got stolen many years ago when my Dad was still alive. The real tragedy is I almost got it back. Some years after Dad died, some police detective called for him saying they had recovered the .22. He told me they had to hang on to it through the trial, and for that matter they didn't even expect it to go to trial, I could get the gun. STOOPID me, I failed to get all the particulars of the detective's name, department &tc. I never heard from him again and I called every danged department for miles around and never found a lead on any of it. It's still gone and that being the gun Dad taught me to shoot rifle with. Its in my closet now. I was 5 years old in '47 when he started me on it. It went from my grand dad to my dad, then to me. i have a grandson all lined up to be the next owner (someday, not too soon, i hope!) DM

He said that he paid $12 for it. Model 12 Remington pump, and though it was in very poor condition since first I saw it, and still is in essentially the same poor condition today, it will shoot minute of beer can out to 50+yds all day long. And that without any discernible rifling anywhere in the last third of the barrel! I've often thought to sleeve the barrel, but that can always be done later, when it really needs it. For now, it is what it is, a cherished piece of family history!

So when checking targets we stated talking. Turns out that he bought it to try to get his daughter into shooting. He said she had no interest in it and said that he was was upset but yet glad to see a younger guy interested in shooting. He said that all kids want to sit on their butts and play games and watch TV. I said yeah they don't know what real fun is getting outside shooting checking your target and good conversation with like minded people. Well turns out his daughter was sitting in his truck on the phone. She steps out and says dad lets go I don't have a signal down here. So I stepped back over to the bench and was getting ready to shoot when she came over and said is that a 22 I said yeah just like your dads. Then I said would you like to try it so she said yeah this thing is cool. So I let her run two 30 round mags she then turns to her dad which by now is watching us and said I want to try that one and did. So to make it more fun I had some zombie targets in the car and set those up. So we eneded up having a contest. She walked away with a smile on her face and I said that if I ever saw her and her dad again we would shoot again. So not only is the colt more interesting to younger shooters it got her into the sport that her dad was trying to do. Mike.

They took hunters in, usually traveling in from New York or Philly, as boarders during hunting season to help make ends meet. One of the hunters told my father he'd buy him a new .22 if he would "show us some deer." The next morning, my 12-year-old father woke up the hunter and took him out onto the porch in front of a herd of about twenty, maybe 50 feet away. The gentleman laughed, but my father received a brand new Winchester Model 69 a few days later. It is now one of my most prized possessions- my father's first rifle, the rifle I was trained on. It cost me nothing the day my father passed away, but I have paid for that day in many other ways since.

My Browning Nomad .22....purchased with my lawn mowing money in the 1960's.....$50.00....and I still have the black and red plastic box it came in. The next war will be like a fight with your wife--impossible to win it or end it.
