So I put a rifle up for sale and it sold and I have to ship it out of state. I've never shipped a firearm before so I have some questions. I do not have a C&R or FFL but the purchasing party has a C&R and of course the rifle I am shipping is C&R eligible. So when I receive a copy of the C&R license is that only for me to confirm that the address I am shipping to is legit or do I need to provide a copy of the C&R to USPS, UPS or whoever I choose to ship this rifle? I went in and spoke with USPS and they handed me a form to fill out that made very little sense and made it sound like I have to have a license to ship. Anyways who is the easiest to ship a rifle through USPS UPS FedEx? Is it me or the shippers liability if this rifle is shipped to someone without a valid license? Pretty much I need a step by step on how to legally ship to a C&R holder I don't want to get some little thing wrong and get fined/arrested whatever. Thanks in advance for the help.

The people you spoke with are probably the last people to speak with.

The shipper does not require an FFL. The license is to have the firearm shipped to them. Generally, UPS Ground is the best way to go. I am assuming this is a long gun, here. Handguns require UPS Overnight.

Anyway, assuming you are shipping a long gun out of state that is C&R eligible. Wrap it up very securely, and package it with a copy of the FFL enclosed. Send it UPS Ground. Go to one of the UPS hubs, not one of those damn stores owned by someone from a third world country.

Typical cost for shipping a long gun anywhere in the continental US will run $20-30. Not a big problem.

Thanks for the info. I will do just that. Also thanks to everyone on this site that has helped in answering my questions this site has made it a lot easier as a young collector/shooter.

Shipping through UPS (or any parcel post shipper) has become a pain in the butt in regards to firearms. First, if one is to ship UPS, it costs a hell of a lot more than it did last year. I just shipped a 3 lb. package for the princely sum of $16.95. Really, I consider that price theft. But I was stuck. I will however no longer ship UPS, nor any other shipper charging such outrageous rates. Does this mean I will no longer be buying and selling items? Possibly.

You however can ship (legally) through UPS or any other shipper (other than USPS as they are special) merely by boxing up your item, going to the local company shipping facility and shipping to the receiver. There are no Federal laws prohibiting such actions, as long as the receiver is an FFL holder, and that the license holder is only dealing in the items specified by his or her license. There are C&R licenses, Class 1 licenses, (licensed dealer) and Class 3 (among several others) each can deal according to the licenses specifics. UPS has a rule that will not allow their "contracted shipping outlets" to ship firearms directly, however if you have an "online" UPS account, you can complete the shipping particulars "online" and just drop it off at any UPS outlet. And be aware, most of the UPS shipping centers are NOT UPS company outlets, which means you cannot just march in there and send a firearm. It's very complicated, but it is reality.

I shipped the rifles that I sold it cost me just over $30 for each rifle. I brought them to a local store that said they did UPS shipping and they said they couldn't legally ship rifles and told me to go to one of the local UPS Stores. I went to the UPS Store and they said they couldn't legally ship it and that I would have to go to the UPS hub. An hour later I am at the UPS processing hub surrounded by UPS trucks wandering through packages trying to find a counter or someone to talk to eventually I did ship my rifles. So shipping 2 rifles cost me about $60, a couple angry hours of my life, and however much gas I used. The 25% commission my local gun store would have charged me to ship looks pretty reasonable now.

I've been shipping long guns and handguns via UPS for nearly 20 years now. I only use the hub. I opened a free account and pre-print all my shipping labels and charge the fees directly to my credit card. All sales include the "buyer pays actual shipping" line. I have shipped some fairly large (MN 91/30s with accessories, Garands, etc.) from California and Arizona to places as far as New York and Florida (and one to Maine.) Average cost has been $25 over the last year or so, given diesel costs. They will also come pick them up for you. Stay away from UPS Stores (that would include FED EX/Kinko) and only use corporate hubs.

When they say they can't 'legally ship' rifles, they are wrong. It is against corporate policy, but not illegal.

Long guns can be shipped via USPS, but again, the local counter people usually don't know their own rules either, so you have to be ready to keep pushing up the chain of command there as well. Costs are actually pretty much the same as UPS.

Really not as big a deal as it sounds. I've sold over 25 long and hand guns from my collection since I moved to Tucson in July. All have shipped via UPS. I have also bought a couple of new guns since that time, through a transfer agent FFL. The hassle is almost the same as the UPS.
