Anxious to post a question in the Mauser forum, but thought it would only be polite to introduce myself first. I've been a collector of vintage items for several years now, but just only recently became interested in firearms. I am the new owner of my dad's deer rifle that he used for as long as I can remember. When I got it home and started looking closer at it, it appears to be a K98 Mauser. Did a little research on it and got hooked. Considering to apply for my C&R license now and become obsessed with another hobby. Looking forward to learning more from you guys and exploring this site.

A lot of vet bring back war trophies were converted into high quality, low cost sporting rifles. That is a process we refer to as "sporterizing." It was an honorable practice that put meat on many a table in its day. Howsomever, that is no longer the case. Also from the 80s on, many military surplus bolt guns were imported as "curios" and being cheap, many were sporterized. Unfortunately, it reared a breed we call "Bubbas." They did not sporterize rifles as much as butcher them. They are no longer cheap but "bubba" is still out there hack sawing stocks and barrels and using chisels on various other parts he can't get a saw onto. (I have seen the results of just such actions.) Plus, these weapons have become quite collectible and many very valuable today.
The point of all this is that we here are dedicated to preserving military surplus and other C&R weapons in original condition. Sporterizing topics are not allowed. I only mention this because of your comment about your Dad's rifle. It is to be cherished for sure. But, it could not be posted about in detail here. I just wanted to make sure that was clear and no mistakes made.
Sometimes such posts are made and the response causes hard feelings. I just want to prevent that.
