Just picked this up yesterday- 9mm Largo...came with 3 mags, 2 sets of grips and a 9mm Luger barrel... and a zippered carry case. I like Star pistols a lot an hope to shoot it later this week...Have the Luger barrel in it now and have ordered Largo ammo which should be here soon... smiley: wink

Where did the 9x19 barrel come from?
That's an extra I'd like to have for mine.
The Largo barrel is kind of rough looking, even after various cleaning methods ahve been applied.

Chuck, the 2 barrels came with the pistol...the Largo barrel shows more wear outside, but it's almost new looking in the bore...The frame and slide have matching rack numbers as do both barrel-same numbers (!!). I know a guy who is something of a Star pistol expert and he has never seen another like that...

The grips were hand made by the previous owner.

I shot it with the 9mm Luger bbl, and it is VERY accurate, as was every other STAR pistol I have ever owned...this is number 7, IIRC.

Got 200 rounds of surplus non corrosive Largo ammo, and it looks so good I ordered another 200. Will shoot the Largo later this weekend.

I'm glad I had the cash to get this one...it was just dumb luck that I even saw it.

The one I've got has a sewer pipe looking bore in the original Largo chambering. It is one of my favorite pistols, yet one I don't hardly ever shoot due to the ammo and bore condition. The slide, frame and barrel match on the one I have here, if I'm not mistaken (which I probably am).
I went with matching numbers over bore condition at the time, thinking, it'll scrub or shoot clean.

It doesn't handle the CCI ammo very well at all, misfeeds, jams, etc; and is not very accurate. I haven't tried any brass cased surplus in it yet. I need to find some more for this piece.
I missed the boat on replacement barrels in 9x19 when they were available.
Those grips are nicely done for hand made grips!!
Is the 9x19 barrel stamped with the same font?

The 2 barrels are marked with the same rack number as are the slide and frame, all identical stamping, although the Largo barrel shows a bit more wear and use. I think they were together for quite a long time, and I haven't seen another like it...I didn't even know it had 2 barrels when I bought it. I'm getting the Santa Barbara surplus Largo ammo from Ammo To Go online (Good price and fast shipping)...got 200 rounds and it all looks clean and dates from the late '60's. Not had any problem shooting it, although I have not shot a lot of it. I should get more while I'm at it...there is no commercial Largo made at this time - CCI no longer makes any.

I really like STAR pistols, and have had maybe 6 of them of various kinds. This is very well made and finished, and very accurate in either caliber. I ordered some repro plastic grips for it, and a new made extra mag but never got them yet.

This was just a lucky find and I really enjoy it a lot.

I have a Modelo Super from the same era as yours I purchased used several years ago; the bore has strong rifling but is also lightly pitted. It was mediocre at best with Spanish surplus NC ammo, so I decided to reload for it and did some looking on the internet for data. There is a link from the Star pistol site toa 9mm Largo pagee, which had quite a bit of data. Take a page from my friend C. E. Harris' book on keeping things simple, I picked a load from the mid range listed for a powder I had on hand with 115 grain Speer gold dots. Velocity is about 1350 and accuracy is very very good. Function is perfect. Used .380 ACP tungsten dies for the chore. The slimmer than 1911 grip profile is very comfortable - I would love a modern rendition in .38 Super with aluminum (7075) frame and 5" barrel - what a nice carry or field gun it would be.

DB, I have had a few Star pistols and I like them a lot. They are very comfortable to grip, and they are all accurate shooters - the most accurate 9mm pistol I have ever owned was a Star 30M, a large all steel and very heavy military pistol. I am carrying my Modelo Super in an ISP holster right now, and I will have to start doing this more often. It is a great, reliable pistol, and easily carried for its size because it is so thin.
