Posts: 92 Dec 14 12 2:31 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None Picked up my second Yugo in a week today. It's gonna be fun. It's an M98/48 with some serious issues. The sights are canted about 15 degrees to the right, along with the rest of the barrel. The front receiver ring looks like it might have a slight bulge, but that could be from the Yugoslav's grinding at it. AND! there's half of a cartridge case stuck in the chamber. Figured that one out when I went to check the headspace and the bolt wouldn't go in. The red-glue laminated stock looks like it's in pretty good shape along with the handguard and the metal pieces are all there and look good. The only things that are missing are the sight hood, cleaning rod, and sling. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it in the end, but I didn't have to pay much for it. Matt

Posts: 13317 Dec 14 12 5:23 PM Forum Site Moderator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	A "bulge" would not be caused by grinding. More like your stuck casing is the culprit. You might have a good spare stock and furniture there. Still, keep usd posted on what you find out. Ok? Oh, just for the record, if you decide to sport it, I doubt many would blame you but, remember that you can't discuss that process here. Site rules are no sporterizing discussions. A bulge is very bad indeed, and I agree with 'nug that the stuck case is the culprit. I am wondering if it wasn't an overpowered handload (would have been a pretty major BOOM). If it actually bulged the receiver ring that could have caused the barrel to back out. I suggest getting it closely inspected by a very good gunsmith. You may have just a nice parts set.

Posts: 92 Dec 14 12 8:57 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Worst case, this one gets cleaned up and turned into a wall-hanger. Even at that, I think I got a good deal. I may just find a barreled action to throw in it while I work on the rest of it. It wouldn't be original but it would still be correct and shootable. There's no way that it's getting sporterized. I've picked up my share of already butchered guns and receivers that I don't need any more sporter fodder. If the receiver is salvagable, but the barrel isn't, I may put on either an original barrel from numrich or one of the in-the-white replacement barrels and a the existing sights. If the receiver isn't salvagable, I'll pick up a barreled receiver for it and use these for rust bluing practice. If I really get surprised and there are problems with the stock and everything else, it will become a decorative piece. I found my camera, but I'm waiting for it to charge. I'll hopefully have some pics up in an hour or so. Matt

Posts: 92 Dec 15 12 12:36 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Pics: canted sights: Here's the telling picture. Someone tried to remove the barrel. There are some pretty faint marks on the barrel shank from what looks like a barrel vice and, thankfully, not a pipe wrench. I couldn't get a good picture of that, but looking through the receiver, there's a shiny spot on the barrel face that shows the exact same rotation as the sights and barrel. (green arrow in the picture) There's also an extremely small gap between the shoulder of the barrel and the face of the receiver, but it's too small to show up in a picture, but it's obvious just looking at it. You can sort-of make out the back end of the case in the chamber. I couldn't get the case out with a bore brush, but hopefully the penetrating oil will help by the end of this weekend. If not, I have a broken shell extractor on the way late next week. I've also got an appointment with my gunsmith the day after christmas to correct the barrel and check out the receiver. I took it in and he gave it a quick once-over first thing this morning and he pointed out that the bulge was there before the top of the receiver was scrubbed. The edge of the grinding follows the slightly bulged part down the side of the receiver farther than the front of the back of the ring, so it was there before it was ground. He thinks that once the case is out and the barrel reset, it will be safe to shoot. All of that with the caveat that he might find something else when he looks at it later. The bore on it looks very good. The crown is a little worn, but still even with no dings or damage. Matt

Posts: 92 Dec 16 12 12:15 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It was between $50 and $100, depending on the value assigned to the other stuff I bought with it. None of the other stuff was gun related, but the gun added $50 to the total, although I don't think I would have gotten it for that by itself.

I think a couple of he mail order discount houses are offering them right now for about 50 bucks USD. Not too bad. Can take her over to a gunsmith and roll the old one out and reset sights,,,,then BINGO...new rifle! Now, busted cartridges can be removed by 'the tool' or a sharp edge brass rod if the case is soaked good for a day or so in solvent... If the neck edge is sharp,,,you sometimes can tap them out...but,,,guessing,,,that procedure probably has been tried by he previouse owner. So, new barrel or what ever path you may choose. Nose Dive.... Cheap, Fast, Good. Kindly pick two.

Posts: 92 Dec 31 12 2:26 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The gunsmith got the barrel straightened out so the sights are correct. The receiver/first-6-inches of the barrel are soaking in a tall glass vase that I commandeered from my wife. Hey, I bought the flowers for her, so technically it's mine too. It's soaking in a mix of kerosene, ATF, and PB-Blaster. Kerosene+ATF is what we used as penetrating oil on the farm when I was growing up. Kroil is slightly better, but not much. I've got a feeling that the stuck case is steel, not brass. The reason it's soaking is that the broken shell extractor isn't working on it. I'll let it soak for a couple more days before trying anything else. There seems to be a nice sharp edge on the mouth of the case so I may be able to catch it with a split and flared piece of 1/4" brass rod. I also have some cerrosafe on the way and I'll probably just wait until that shows up because that's what the gunsmith was going to use to remove it. You never know. The case might be sitting on the bottom of the vase already. But I doubt it. That would be far to convenient. Numrich has some K98k barrels in good to very good condition that would still keep the rifle correct and shootable if nothing else works. Matt

Yes you need it installed, with both sights set and bluing would be needed also. Really have no idea what a rifle smith will charge for all that nowadays. Just an option for you. Nose Dive. Steel cases are lacquered and can cause a build up of lacquer on the chamber walls which, when it gets hot is very tacky besides reducing chamber clearance. It's a common problem for mosin shooter. Btw, lacquer thinner is the only thing that will dissolve lacquer.
